Choosing a Statement Mirror to Fit your Style

Home décor can be an extremely tricky topic to tackle. If you’ve ever tried to do it without research or training, you know that things often don’t fall into place as you’d envisioned.  This is true even when many options are gathered in one place for you to browse. This can be very frustrating. Comparing the mess in front of you to Pinterest perfection can be enough to make you give up entirely, especially if you’re on a budget! Luckily, amidst all of the confusion, one multi-purpose, often budget-friendly, option surfaces; the statement mirror.

Perhaps the single most versatile home décor item, wall mirrors come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. There are endless possibilities to fit your budget and your space. From simple to ornate, small to large, and everything in between, UNICEF boasts an impressive collection of statement mirrors that are perfectly on trend. For example, Rita Addo Zakour’s “African Prince” is simplistic, modern, and striking all at once!

One benefit of having a statement mirror is that it makes any space look much larger. Because the mirror reflects other areas of the room, the bigger the mirror, the bigger the space appears!  “Golden Reflections” by Marcos Luzalde is one of UNICEF’s larger offerings. This mirror is carefully carved and beautifully hand painted.

But, how should this mirror be positioned?  In general, large mirrors should be centered above other décor and furniture, whether hung vertically or horizontally. For example, if a large mirror is hung on the wall above a couch, the mirror should be placed so that there is an equal amount of the couch on either side of the mirror, (left and right.)  This creates symmetry.  If placed above a mantle, the mirror should be centered in the same manner, but with the bottom of the mirror “anchored” to the top of the mantle. In other words, no space should exist in between the top of the mantel and the bottom of the mirror. This is assuming your mirror is rectangular!

Circular mirrors are in a whimsical world of their own. These mirrors are unique in shape and are often intricately carved or painted. “Bluebell Morning Mirror” by Asunta Pelaez is extremely eye-catching. With brightly colored blooms laid wide open, this mirror mimics the look of stained glass. Round mirrors are often used to break up the monotony of rectangular frames. These mirrors are also fantastic for smaller spaces or areas that are already occupied with décor but need something more.

Perhaps the most creative way to decorate with a mirror is to use it as one part of a whole. This look draws on both function and aesthetic! Paired with any flat surface, (such as a table,) a mirror instantly becomes a vanity or a focal piece within an entryway. Khalid Ali’s “Mystery of India Mirror” utilizes a beautiful octagon shape. With straight sides, this mirror complements the straight edge of the table it hangs above.
