Details

Hand woven ikat is practiced in many countries and cultures around the world with the most bold and colorful coming from the Fergana Valley region in eastern Uzbekistan. Combining this artful heritage and modern styling, Uzbek designer Abduvali creates his wearable masterpieces. The narrow woven cotton ikat panels are meticulously stitched together to create one continuous pattern from side to side. This attention to

detail is evident in each piece from the talented artisan in his Tashkent studio.

The oversized jacket is based on the traditional 'Chapan' worn during the cold winter months. This mid-weight version features an oversized fit, extra-long sleeves to be rolled to the desired length and a self tie belt to further adjust the fit. Layering beautifully over your favorite sweater or dress, the jacket is cotton lined and includes side seam pockets.

More than selling clothes, we offer an experience, a piece of history, and a source of joy, as our creations bring happiness to those who wear them.

"Our craft holds a deep connection to the rich heritage of the Uzbek people, who have a long history of wearing clothing... made from silk and cotton. We take pride in blending old designs with new ones, utilizing organic cotton, handmade silk ikat, silk bahmal velvet, and vintage suzani embroidery. More than selling clothes, we offer an experience, a piece of history, and a source of joy, as our creations bring happiness to those who wear them.

"My inspiration derives from the captivating tapestry of Uzbek culture and the fascination it sparks in people from all corners of the world. We've successfully spread our products globally, and the positive feedback from our customers fuels our passion. We seamlessly meld ethnic designs with modern trends, with dreams of flourishing as a business, expanding production, and providing employment opportunities for women. Above all, our ultimate aspiration is to make Uzbek culture renowned worldwide. As our production expanded, we ventured into crafting garments from handmade ikat fabrics, establishing collaborations with skilled suppliers in Samarkand and Margilan.

"I am a husband and a father of four - two daughters and two sons. My children's dreams of higher education and carrying on the craft fill my heart with hope and determination. In 2014, I faced a daunting diagnosis of a retroperitoneal tumor, with doctors predicting a grim outcome. Though initially consumed by despair, the support of my family bolstered my spirits. I turned to faith, praying for healing, and focused solely on the positive. Through treatment and recovery, I learned the resilience of the human spirit - how setting goals and having determination can lead to triumphant outcomes. My educational journey led me to specialize in Design and Art. Post-graduation, I found myself working at the Museum of Economic Development, curating the department dedicated to historical apparel. This role ignited my love for ancient clothing and ikat fabrics. Subsequently, I joined the Artistic Expertise as an antiques expert. Yet, it was in 2015 that my true calling unfolded as I embarked on the path of ethnic clothing production, a craft I passionately pursue to this day. My parents instilled in me a deep appreciation for family values and the responsibility to care for one's kin, a principle I hold close to my heart."

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
