Himalayan Naari

"We learned knitting and weaving from our families since childhood. Most of us learned the art from our mothers. We share our techniques with each other to improve and learn together."

Established in 2010 in a hill station in Uttarakhand, India, Himalayan Naari is a women weavers group. The weavers in... the area were making and selling their knitting and textile arts long before that, but Himalayan Naari has given them a larger market and more regular sales.

The women at the organization make exquisite high-quality handmade products with beautiful designs in order to improve their living standards. Many of the women in Naari have very difficult financial circumstances. "We have struggles to educate our children and have had to deal with malnutrition in our family," they say.

"We learned knitting and weaving from our families since childhood. Most of us learned the art from our mothers. We share our techniques with each other to improve and learn together.

"We purchase the wool for our knitting as a group and have it spun. The lamb's hair is very fine and more challenging to knit with. Older women in our community raise rabbits and comb them to obtain the angora that we use.

"Making perfect quality for western markets is a challenge. We work hard day and night to ensure that every item that we ship is perfect.

"We've had wonderful times together, singing and dancing — this brings us a lot of joy and laughter. We recently opened the Himalayan Naari's Women Center. We hope that Himalayan Naari will be known for its unique designs and wonderful quality of work all around the world."

Basanti Karki, one of the weavers, lives with her two children and a number of nieces and nephews who all attend school here. She has been an active participant of Naari since its founding in 2010. A master knitter, Basanti has sent many beautiful products to the USA. Since joining Himalayan Naari, Basanti explains, "I have grown in my self-confidence and can work very hard now. Naari is a breakthrough for women's empowerment and I hope it will thrive in future."

A founding member of Himalayan Naari, Deepa Koranga is a mother of energetic twin boys. She lives in a rented room so that they can attend school. Deepa herself has an 8th-grade education but has high hopes for her sons. In talking about her own ambitions, Deepa commented, "At Himalayan Naari, we work cooperatively together. I have learned new knitting stitches and some computer skills. Himalayan Naari has given me self-determination and economic independence."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
