Inspired by the Mesoamerican culture of Teotihuacan, the Barrios Home Workshop artisans in Mexico create this excellent wall accent. The mask is crafted from three types of clay and depicts Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec feathered serpent deity.

“The splendid Ancient City of Teotihuacan represents my cultural roots, due to its amazing artisan history, which... introduces us to life and ancient customs.

“Hello, I am Enrique Barrios Sanchez. I was 8 years old when my father taught me this trade. I liked it so much that I started to make my own crafts, always with the help of my father; and since then, we have been working in this trade for sixty years.

“Teopanacazco Casa Barrios is the name of our workshop. Teopanacazco means “House of the Potter”, and it was also a Teotihuacan housing complex where my grandfather José María Barrios lived. Since 1887 they were potters from Teotihuacan. My father continues with the pottery tradition, reproducing beautiful ceremonial and utilitarian pieces inspired by the Teotihuacan culture. It is a wonderful family tradition, a legacy of our ancestors for current and future generations to know through pieces that represent our roots. Currently, my family collaborates in the growth of our workshop. We support each other in various activities, from the extraction of clay to decoration, engraving and the rest of the process.

“One of the greatest challenges is to make figures as extraordinary as those made by the ancient Teotihuacan masters. To make the pieces, we use three types of clay; black, yellow, and sandy. We use the feathery bulrushes of the tule plant, as well as mineral paints and other materials. To be able to mold the figures, we use wooden tools or instruments in the shape of a pencil, an oven made of stone and organic firewood. All these materials are a bit difficult to work with. It is heavy to excavate the mud from the mine and knead it, since the whole process is by hand. Finally the paintings are created in the workshop.

“I really like the shapes, the faces, the colors and the nobility of the material. The taste for this trade is essential to acquire mastery in this art. I am willing to continue learning; there is still a long way of knowledge to go, and why not strive to become like the great Teotihuacan masters?

“It has been difficult to be self-employed, but we continue to move forward despite marketing difficulties, lack of outreach, and sadly unfair competition. I want people to learn about this wonderful craft, so that it generates sources of employment in the archaeological zone of Teotihuacan.”

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
