Meet the Artist

Gayane Arushanyan

Gayane Arushanyan

I believe that every thread woven into a carpet carries a story, a piece of history, and a touch of artistry that can inspire and uplift those who encounter it.

"Hello, I’m Gayane Arushanyan, an actress by profession and a passionate carpet maker at heart. My journey is a blend of... performing arts and the intricate world of carpet weaving, both of which have shaped who I am today. Born and raised in the historic city of Shushi, I have always been deeply connected to my Armenian heritage, which is beautifully reflected in both my acting and my craftsmanship.

"My foray into carpet making began in 2017 at the Narekatsi Art Institute of Shushi. Initially, it was an amateur pursuit, something I did alongside my commitments to the theater. However, what started as a casual interest quickly transformed into a profound passion. I found myself captivated by the delicate threads and vibrant colors that come together to create these stunning works of art. Determined to master this craft, I delved into the study of Armenian ornaments and their rich history. Understanding the significance of each pattern and color was crucial for me, as I wanted to ensure that I was not only creating beautiful carpets but also accurately preserving and honoring our cultural heritage.

"For over eight years, I have balanced my life between the stage and the loom. Acting has always been a significant part of my identity, allowing me to express emotions and stories in ways that resonate with audiences. Simultaneously, carpet making provided me with a different medium to convey beauty and tradition. Each carpet I create is a testament to my dedication to both arts, intertwining the expressive nature of performance with the meticulous craftsmanship of weaving.

"The year 2020 brought unforeseen challenges when the war disrupted my life in Shushi. We lost our home and our beloved hometown, forcing me to relocate to Yerevan. This period of upheaval was incredibly difficult, but it also ignited a new determination within me to continue my artistic endeavors despite the adversity. Moving to the capital city, I sought ways to sustain and grow my carpet-making passion while adapting to a new environment.

"In 2021, I took a significant step towards turning my passion into a viable business by enrolling in the AGBU Women Entrepreneurs Program. The three-month course, taught by experienced professionals, was transformative. I learned invaluable skills in business management, marketing, and financial planning, which equipped me to effectively run my own carpet-making enterprise. I am immensely grateful for the knowledge and support I received during this program, as it empowered me to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship with confidence. Over the past four years, I have actively participated in numerous exhibitions in Yerevan, showcasing my carpets to a broader audience. These exhibitions have been instrumental in gaining recognition and appreciation for my work. Additionally, I have visited various carpet factories as part of these exhibitions, gaining deeper insights into the industry and expanding my network of fellow artisans and enthusiasts. One of the highlights of my recent endeavors was participating in the BiG Christmas Market, where I had the opportunity to present my creations to an international audience, further elevating my profile as a carpet maker.

"Today, I continue my work in a dedicated studio located at Hrachya Kochar’s address in Yerevan. This space is where my creativity flourishes, allowing me to focus on designing and weaving carpets that reflect both traditional Armenian motifs and contemporary aesthetics. Each piece I create is infused with the love and resilience that my journey embodies, serving as a bridge between our rich past and a vibrant future.

"Embroidery and carpet making are not just hobbies for me; they are extensions of my identity and my way of preserving and celebrating Armenian culture. I believe that every thread woven into a carpet carries a story, a piece of history, and a touch of artistry that can inspire and uplift those who encounter it. My hope is to continue creating beautiful, meaningful carpets that honor our heritage and bring joy to people’s lives."

A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.
