Luciana Sandoval

"I recycle the paper I use, which give my figurines an eco-friendly theme, and I use the icons of our culture in my designs."

"I'm Luciana Sandoval Coronado. I was born in 1986 in the populous city of Lima, the political, cultural, financial and... commercial center of Peru. I'd say I'm super-creative, hardworking and responsible. I'm always ready to offer a smile.

"My life hasn't always been easy. The most difficult experience was as a mother of two children. It's taken a lot of sacrifices and hard work to pay the bills each day while trying to develop my skills as an artist. Working independently has meant financial instability and I've had to divide myself into three at the same time.

"Even so, despite all the obstacles along the way, I really enjoy my papier mache designs and I work with joy and conviction. I've seen for myself that you can develop sustainable work through our popular arts. Every day is an affirmation of love and confidence in my chosen art form.

"I discovered papier mache when I was a young girl. My mother loved our Latin American handicrafts and she taught us to admire and appreciate them as well as the artisans who created them and handed down their skill from generation to generation.

"I thank God that my parents were able to pay for my studies in design and art. This is how I got the idea for my work. I recycle the paper I use, which gives my figurines an eco-friendly theme, and I use the icons of our culture in my designs.

"I learned the techniques when I was an art student and I took courses in Peruvian aesthetics and design. In addition to my personal interest in researching these themes, I teach classes on art, recycling and creativity to children and adults in different schools, towns, businesses and other associations that request them.

"I first began this great personal project in 2008 when I crafted my first designs. Since then, I've learned a lot more about everything, from improving my materials to developing strategies for promoting my art. I've learned a bit about management and business for artists, but without losing the ethics behind my project. Making my workshop sustainable over time has been quite a challenge.

"I love the way that creativity can flow during the crafting process. Papier mache transforms a discarded material into an object of art. My challenge is to teach this art in such a way that it can offer a sustainable job alternative for others.

"My inspiration comes from the artistic expressions of our native peoples, from my deep love for popular Peruvian art but also that of Latin American and of the world. We must learn to observe and admire, to value, respect and learn from this wonderful legacy.

"I dream of contributing in some way toward a conscience of recycling and re-utilizing discarded materials, not only in Peru but also in other parts of the world. I hope to send a message about caring for our environment through an eco-friendly lifestyle."

In 2011, Luciana's work took first place in a national contest for innovation in handicraft design.

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
