Details

Guatemalan artisan Maura Parra combines supple, black leather and cotton handwoven on a traditional Mayan backstrap loom in this stylish messenger bag. The textile is set into the front flap and features an intricate pattern in red, blue, and linen white. With an adjustable strap, the bag can be worn over the shoulder or across the body. There are two exterior pockets, one on the back secured with a zipper, and one open pocket under the foldover flap that stays in place with a magnetized snap. Inside, a zippered pocket is set into the lining. The main compartment can be expanded by unzipping the zipper that runs along the bottom and up the sides.

"I’ve always been drawn to handmade works of art, and am extremely proud of our Mayan ancestral heritage."

"I’ve always been drawn to handmade works of art, and am extremely proud of our ancestral Mayan heritage. For years,... I've been in awe of how artisan hands can transform our colorful traditions into gorgeous masterpieces. As an entrepreneurial and creative woman, the idea behind creating fashion accessories that feature Guatemala's most beautiful customs was to showcase them beyond our borders.

"I started out in 2014 with a close friend as my working partner. Together, we managed to meet the expert who would become our advisor and mentor for the next couple of years. Thanks to his expertise and willingness to share his knowledge, we were able to create one-of-a-kind designs that were premium and high quality, yet affordable and accessible. We owe part of our creative process to him, as he was adamant about paying attention to detail from pinning inspirations, to sketching designs, to scouting out the best textiles and materials.

"During our startup journey, we met a variety of artisan groups around Guatemala, experienced in handling and assembling handbags and accessories, among other handmade items. Often, these groups are composed of entire extended families — moms, aunts, cousins, adult children and even young grandmothers. We also had the opportunity to learn different weaving techniques on the backstrap loom and floor loom, thanks to several Mayan weaving cooperatives willing to share this rich cultural heritage.

"Now in 2016, I'm venturing out on my own, innovating with different fabrics and materials to create new and improved collections. The new lines combine materials such as beads, velvet and leather and with our traditional handwoven textiles for a modern, yet elegant look and feel.

"I'm truly inspired by our artisans' work and dedication. The opportunity to work alongside weavers in the creation of something that speaks to our rich cultural heritage and contributes to the preservation of our traditions is a real blessing. The ability to collectively contribute in the creative process is what makes this hard work worthwhile.

"I've seen firsthand the amount of creativity and hard work that goes into creating something from nothing. Because of this, I believe in and support the fair-trade movement to eliminate the habit of haggling or bargaining over artisans' hand-labor. Most of the artisan groups I work with have set up shop in their homes. It's truly humbling to see how far these hardworking people will go to better their chances at a steady income and provide their families with better education and health opportunities. The gratification of being part of this movement is why I keep this project going, and I hope to be of further help and service to as many artisans as I can for as long as I can."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
