Details

Wonderful authentic Djembe drum from Ghana by Joseph Kwadjo Aboagye. The instrument's lower rim is decorated with one of the most popular adinkra symbols, Bi Nnka Bi, which means "Bite not one another." It represents togetherness and community spirit, sharing a message of harmony and group cooperation.

Djembe drums originated in Senegal and Mali. Djem refers to the tree from which the drum's wood comes, while be means "goat," alluding to the goatskin that serves as the instrument's playing surface.

To play, sit on the edge of a chair with ankles crossed, the top of the drum fitting neatly between the knees as the base of the drum rests behind the heels. This way the drum is angled away from the player. Sitting up straight with hands resting on the drum's playing surface, the wrists should become flat and this is the position to create the standard djembe sounds. Djembes produce three basic sounds: bass, tone, and slap.

BASS: With the hand flat and fingers together, place the hand at the dimension of two fists above the center of the playing surface. Allow the hand to strike and bounce back to the original position above the center.

TONE: This is the high-pitched sound produced by striking the top surface nearest the edge with firmly placed fingers.

SLAP: Strike the playing surface's edge first with the heel of the hand, and then allow the fingers to naturally bounce down towards the drum's center.

Meet the Artist

Joseph Kwadjo Aboagye

Joseph Kwadjo Aboagye

Joseph Kwadjo Aboagye has been featured in various periodicals.

"When I was in the fourth grade I went to live with an aunt who was and still is working at the Arts Center. So I... virtually lived my life growing up at the Arts Center. I helped my aunt and meanwhile took great interest in the way various carvings were made.

"I understudied for almost all the craftsmen at the center, and as a result I am now able to carve fine drums. From the beginning, I loved the tasks involved in carving and concentrated on them exclusively in my spare time. I had a friend who was also interested in drum-making, so in 1999 we joined forces to open our own small business making drums and carvings. I have many customers now, including cultural troupes, tourists who pass by and people from all walks of life, from all over the world.

"I especially enjoy working in front of the sea. It fills me with great inspiration to work there and to wonder who in the world will next touch the drum I am making.

"We use wood, animal hides, cloth, iron rods, and strings to make the drums. I engrave Adinkra and other carved symbols and designs into each drum. After this, my assistants smooth the wood with sandpaper. I also affix iron rings, covered with cloth to avoid rusting, then weave the strings onto the drums – this is called 'pegging.' It allows the skin to stick to the iron rings and thus make the surface of the drum firm and very taut. After this, we test each drum for sound and tone quality – the part of the process we enjoy most, and the final touch that guarantees that every drum that departs my shop carries with it great sound and quality."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
