My art relaxes me, allowing me to capture my ideas in the cords and materialize them. The cords and knots have become part of my therapy and part of my process. My art saved me.
"My name is Allan Víquez and I am from Costa Rica. I grew up and was raised with my parents, who have always worked... hard. My paternal grandfather was a merchant, and my maternal grandfather was a skilled woodworker. My grandparents were essential in my upbringing, not only professionally but also as a human being. They taught me values, and I know that I owe a lot to them. Unfortunately, they are no longer with me physically, but they accompany me every step I take. I work hard so that they can be proud of me.
"During the pandemic, due to the economic crisis, we lost our home. We lost a part of our lives, and it was a very sad time for my entire family. However, this episode in our lives filled us with a lot of determination to fight, and from there, my craft was born.
During her free time, my mom used to make macramé products. I used to watch her, but I never really got interested. During the pandemic, it became my salvation. I asked my mom to teach me how to make bracelets. Learning wasn't easy, but she had a lot of patience and taught me step by step with love. My art relaxes me, allowing me to capture my ideas in the cords and materialize them. The cords and knots have become part of my therapy and part of my process. My art saved me.
"My first creation excited me so much that I sent it to a great friend who still keeps it to this day. From there, I managed to make many more and started selling them to help our home, and by God's grace, I have succeeded. But I know I still have a long way to go, and that's why I keep fighting.
"My 4-year-old daughter is the most significant reason for me not to give up. She is my reason for living. I dream of recovering the house that was taken from us. I want to see my daughter and my parents in a better situation, be able to put a plate of food on their table, and give my parents the whole world as a token of gratitude for their efforts and love. The day I rest will be the day I see my parents and my daughter completely happy in our new home."
