The Cantel Blown Glass Artisans work with recycled glass that would otherwise end up in a landfill, making their pieces eco-friendly in addition to being beautiful. The artisans hand-blow this clear glass figurine of the Virgin Mary, her head bowed and her hands clasped in prayer. Small flecks and bubbles in the statuette are a testament to the hand-crafted process.

"Our work focuses on inspiration and creativity. We are the only cooperative in Guatemala that does this kind of work, and this motivates us each day."

The cooperative was the idea of fifteen artisans who had formerly worked together as employees. Their job had been... difficult for all of them, and the experience had worn them down physically, intellectually and emotionally. But it also gave them the incentive to create something better. They saw the opportunity to produce handcrafted designs in blown glass, and formed the cooperative in 1976.

"To create our designs, we recycle glass that we purchase from businesses and individuals," a member of the cooperative explains. "By recycling, our work contributes to the ecology.

"The art of blown glass has a long history. It is believed that artisans in Egypt may have been the first to create it. And the art spread throughout the world.

"To learn the techniques, we met with foreign blown glass artisans and we've studied and put our skills to use with great care, determination, dedication and attention to details. We realized that one of the best ways to learn is by observing someone who knows what he or she is doing, and then to practice until our pieces come out well. The secret is to never give up.

"In all the years we've been working in the cooperative, we've learned an infinity of things, some easily, others through our errors. But we've always had the attitude that we can learn something from every experience, no matter how difficult. Once we had to take out a bank loan to expand our workshop. As time went by, we lost control of the bank accounts and, when we became aware of the problem and the situation we'd gotten into, the bank was about to take control of the cooperative. Eventually we were able to solve the problem, however we learned we need to be more in control so as to avoid problems in the future. But at the time, we didn't know this because it was our first such experience. It has been situations like this one that taught us how to get ahead.

"Our dream is to reach a wide market, both in Guatemala and internationally. We want to sell our designs based on fair market prices. But most of all, we want to continue as a proud Guatemalan enterprise.

"Our work focuses on inspiration and creativity. We are the only cooperative in Guatemala that does this kind of work, and this motivates us each day. Our work lets us support our families and others, too, as well as their families."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
