Details

Sandra Huamán of Peru presents an elegant reversible cardigan. Knit of 100% baby alpaca, the finest fleece from the first shearing of the season, it is lightweight yet sumptuously soft. In turquoise with black detailing on one side, and the reverse on the other, the open sweater features a jacquard knit design of butterflies resting on the outstretched tendrils of a garden. Hand-embroidered details on the butterflies and flowers in bright colors add to the beauty of the design. Loose-fitting elbow-length sleeves are solid black.

"I like designs with the beauty of the flowers we see in the Peruvian sierra, the geometric shapes seen in terraced fields and the colors of our traditional Cuzco weavings."

"My grandparents were always merchants. They had a very small workshop for handmade items. My grandmother knitted and... crocheted clothing, sweaters, stockings and baby booties, and also embroidered sweaters in the styles and colors of Cuzco.

"They taught me everything, and we taught these skills to women in nearby communities, specifically to single mothers in Huancayo.

"This art requires a lot of practice, determination and dedication. If we want quality work, we must be involved in every step of the crafting process. In college, I studied business administration, and this has helped me organize our workshop.

"When I first became involved in the world of textiles, it was tough! We were finally able to buy a knitting machine to speed up the process and we couldn't wait for it to arrive. We knew this was an important step for the family, and we financed part of the purchase, incurring a large debt with the bank. Finally the day for delivery arrived. But the truck was in a wreck on the highway and the machine was pretty beat up with a lot of broken pieces.

"Without a doubt, this was a harsh blow. Practically all of our savings were invested in the machine and, without the ability to work, we didn't have money enough to buy materials or even pay the people who collaborate with us.

"But thanks to everyone on the team and our tenacity and willingness to work, little by little, we were able to recover from this setback. Moreover, we were able to learn from this experience.

"The simple things in nature inspire me. I like designs with the beauty of the flowers we see in the Peruvian sierra, the geometric shapes seen in terraced fields and the colors of our traditional Cuzco weavings.

"I think my greatest challenge is to design an all new collection each season, with different and innovative details.

"In the future I want to expand our workshop and grow as a family. I want to create a future for the family so that our name is recognized not only in Peru but throughout the world. To forge a family legacy based on our wonderful textile arts, our culture and traditions.

"We are very happy to be a part of the Novica family and are thrilled to share our designs with you."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
