Meet the Artist

Hilton Korley Boye

Hilton Korley Boye

My hopes and dreams are to make my works more appealing to buyers; to improve on the quality of my work; and to become one of the best African artists.

“Hilton Boye Korley is my name. I was born in 1975 in Accra, Ghana. My friends would say I am a shy and generous person... who loves to stay indoors. I am a painter.

“It’s been 19 years since I started painting, and I got interested because I had a passion to draw and paint at an early age in. I got attracted to the color combinations in forming a concept, moving away from the work to examine it when done. I wasn’t taught by anyone, because I studied bricklaying in school and after school I diverted into painting. I used the ink of my father, who was a writer, to draw images I would see around; and I would sell art works on paper to make a living. Later I read and attended a few part-time classes to become unique in my own way. I repaint works which I don’t like, to get the correct one. The materials I use are paper, canvas, and acrylic and oil paints. I had to buy the materials in bits and it took months to get them. After I got the materials and painted, I had to wait for a work to sell so I could get enough cash to paint another.

“Starting on my own wasn’t easy. I lost my elder brother, who assisted my dad in taking care of the family. He was so sick, and as I visited him at the hospital and saw him die, it was a big blow to me, and I thank God I have overcome that.

“I mastered this work by understanding the skills of big artists who have made names for themselves. I have also visited other artists to observe how they paint and improve upon my skills. I have helped students with their projects and I have had the chance to tutor at four different institutional programs.

“My favorite thing about my work is discovering new styles and color combinations to create a refreshing match. My inspirations come from watching TV, the environment where I live and also taking pictures of things that fascinates me. My hopes and dreams are to make my works more appealing to buyers; to improve on the quality of my work; and to become one of the best African artists.”

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
