Details

With this painting, Javanese artist Reza Dwakiss offers a warning about smoking. He paints in a modern cubist style, depicting a smoker in the foreground with Reza watching in the background. Text and writing characterizes this painting, most notably the word "tainted" written on one of the smoker's lungs. Says the artist, "This painting is inspired by my daily life, seeing some people with poor health that will still smoke a bunch of cigarettes in a single day."

Meet the Artist

Reza Dwakiss

"Community tradition is also an inspiration, as I paint with colors that are often used in the community."

“My name is Reza. I was born in Metro, Lampung province. My village is a peaceful village. Even though our people are... notoriously tough, we all live in harmony. When I was born, my parents were civil servants. They were tough parents and a little authoritarian; they didn’t approve of me being a painter.

“I have liked to draw ever since childhood, but didn’t think about becoming a painter, especially since my parents didn't support it. But, when I graduated from high school, I wanted to continue on to the Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta. My parents forbade this because they wanted me to study in a major that could work in an office so I could make money. I followed their advice, and worked in an office after graduating. But, one day, I finally resigned to pursue my goals as a painter.

“One day, when I was in Jakarta and starving, I decided to talk to the shopkeeper of a food stall. I asked for food in exchange for help with her stall, since I didn’t have any money, and she agreed.

“One funny experience I had was when I was drawing nudes in my English exercise book. My teacher caught me, and I was punished.

“My friends describe me as a funny, spontaneous, and strange person. I like painting, music, sports, and ping-pong. When not painting, I like to play music. I am married to a woman from North Kalimantan, and we do not have any children yet.

“Everything we hear is opinion, not fact. Everything we see is only our perspective, not reality. These words are very useful for overcoming negative feelings when you’re down. I feel better when I remember these words.

“My best work is painting. I get inspiration from daily activities that cross my mind. Community tradition is also an inspiration, as I paint with colors that are often used in the community. I have codes and special features in my work found in my use of color and composition, as well.

“I use canvas, acrylic paint, and brushes. The materials are easily available in the painting shop. I can prepare the ingredients myself, and sometimes I use recycled materials and scrap. To help preserve nature, I use coconut fiber in my brushes and natural coloring materials from wood, so that my work is environmentally friendly.”

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
