By Fernando Sayan Polo, this splendid portrait of the Holy Virgin reveals the influence of Peru's pre-Hispanic art that melds with European styling. His color palette is one favored by the ancient Inca, and the patterns on Mary's gown recall colonial art created by ancient artists. Yet Our Lady's lovely face and halo suggest Spanish paintings. This exquisite portrait is adorned with bronze leaf.

The artist works in the style of Renaissance masterpieces found in the convents and churches of Cuzco. The painting is a copy of a classic portrait, a theme he often repeats. Sayan gives it his own artistic interpretation.

"I'm concerned with the Andean world and its relationship to its principal element - the human being."

The painting of Fernando Sayan (Lima, 1947) is born of the intense communication between man and his ancestral past. Of... a reflective nature, his contemplative mind reminds us of a strong Incan stone skillfully positioned. A man frugal in words (although rich in dreams) this apparent disadvantage in expressing himself is supplanted in the language of his art, full of sounds, with which the artist becomes loquacious in the search of his Andean world in order to depict the human condition fused with its emotions.

"I've drawn and painted since childhood, I haven't found a better way to express myself than through my art. I enrolled in the Escuela Nacional Superior de Bellas Artes to acquire theoretic principles and a better direction for my art. I'm concerned with the Andean world and its relationship to its principal element - the human being. The dignity of Peruvian identity and the equity that by natural law is deserved in honor of peace and happiness. This is what my art proposes to transmit without self-interest. Cuzco is the root of my essential motivation although I also create figures with general Peruvian essence.

"My pictorial technique is simple and direct, free and not stylized. My work is continuous - I start with a sketch or a study that I invent on the canvas, finding and adjusting the tones. I never revise my work, what I set out to do I finish. I like to persevere upon what is fresh and my intuition indicates the harmony of form and color. I feel satisfied with the final product of my painting.

"In terms of the challenges that I've had to confront in my life, I set out to be the guide of my family and I have the satisfaction of having done that. I don't allow stinginess and for that reason I have many disciples for whom my art holds no secrets. To Novica clients I'd like to say this - my painting identifies with my country's beauty and that beauty must be understood for its singularity and seen in the light of a country with its own language, and that is the language of my painting."

With his themes Fernando Sayan immerses us in the world of Andean reminiscences of terrestrial impact. With hues of ocher and madder, and others defying description, he sets free a white bird seeking sanctuary in his work.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
