Details

His weariness palpable, a man pauses in his busy day for a shoeshine. He seems lost in thought as the younger man vigorously polishes the worn black shoes. "This is an almost obligatory stop in Quetzaltenango. The gentleman I depict is measuring his strength for the day's work ahead as he takes a break in front of the Municipal Theater," Mario Sergio Aviles says. The Guatemalan artist works in lucid oils to capture the scene. To the left stands the iconic sculpture of Artemis, the Greek goddess of nature, harvests and hunting.

Titled "La pausa" in Spanish.

Meet the Artist

Mario Sergio Aviles

Mario Sergio Aviles

"I try to capture moments from everyday life, which may seem typical of our land, and yet very few people stop and see that they actually possess an infinite beauty."

"My full name is Mario Sergio Avilés Hernández, and my artistic name is Savilés. I grew up in Guatemala City with my... mother, and I've been told that my grandfather, who I never met, was a sculptor and that some of his pieces are in El Salvador, but I don't really know where.

"I've loved to paint and draw ever since I was a kid – in fact my earliest memories are of me drawing. I am a creative and entrepreneurial person, and I consider my art to be my greatest gift. To me, art is a way of capturing feelings and sceneries and most of all, the essence of those who I portray in my compositions. I love to depict the richness of Guatemalan culture, the beauty and simplicity of its people. We are a very special people, so being able to capture those moments that reflect the uniqueness of my homeland is something that makes me very happy.

"When I was a little boy I learned to paint on my own, there wasn't anyone around that could teach me. But when I was 13 years old I got accepted to Guatemala's National School of Fine Arts, which at the time was directed by Max Saravia Gual. I went at night, because I was at school during the day, and I remember my art teacher constantly telling me to paint my own compositions – she couldn't believe that I was painting on my own!

"It's difficult being an artist in Guatemala. There was a time, not so long ago, when people didn't appreciate local art. They just wanted whatever came from abroad. This limited the art market, which already is difficult for artists. Those trends have changed now, but the problems persist. People do value national art, but they can't afford it, which makes it difficult for us artists to provide for our families.

"I dream with being able to show the world the beauty of Guatemala's culture. I love to paint and share my country's stories, the people, and the colors of our traditional costumes, our folk art, customs and traditions. I try to capture moments from everyday life, which may seem typical of our land, and yet very few people stop and see that they possess an infinite beauty. The simplicity of those scenes is what makes our culture so beautiful – it enriches our culture.

"My daughter Valeria is an artist in her own right and now she is featured in Novica too. I always encourage her to follow her own path so she doesn't feel obliged to follow mine. It's important for me that she develop her own style, and for that an artist needs to experiment continuously and learn from experience. I enjoy working alongside her, and guide her, but I never intervene in her decisions or stray her away from her own path. We both enjoy this since we share the same passion for art.

"I would like you to know that my compositions are original works of art that share the essence of Guatemala. In that sense, when you acquire one, you gain a piece of Guatemala."

Mario Sergio has taken part in several exhibitions in Guatemala, and his work has been distinguished with different awards including 1st place by the Comité Nacional Preparatorio del Festival Nacional de Juventud y Estudiantes de Guatemala for Spontaneous Drawing and 1st place for Artistic Advertising given by the Central American Institute of Marketing and Advertising.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
