Details

Peruvian artisan Eleodora Salvatierra handcrafts a lovely, intricate nativity scene out of a blend of cotton and acrylic fabric in this arpillera tree skirt. In the scene, the artisan combines Andean village life--a small village next to a stream, grazing livestock, and workers tending the animals and harvesting crops--with the nativity story of wise men on camels crossing an Andean valley to meet the baby Jesus. Mary and Joseph kneel by the baby and a shooting star graces the night sky overhead. Hand-embroidered details and a multitude of colors and textures bring this scene to life and the tree skirt is bordered with red, hand-crocheted trim finished with two red pompoms.

Eleodora Salvatierra

Eleodora Salvatierra

"Every colorful thread I use transmits the reality of my community and of my people."

"My name is Eleodora Salvatierra Mitma and I was born in Cangallo-Cochapata province on 6 May, 1965. I have always felt... like an artisan. Art is within us all, we just need to express it. We Peruvians have inherited this gift from our ancestors.

"My work reflects my ideas and my feelings. It shows people our path through time, as well as the art and culture of the Peruvian people.

"I have been making arpilleria since I was in school. What motivates my work is the love I feel for my country, and a desire to show the rest of the world the beauty of our landscapes and our customs. Every colorful thread I use transmits the reality of my community and of my people.

"I have exhibited my work in several places and with great pride. I really started sewing arpilleria compositions out of necessity. We are eight sisters and my parents couldn't afford to put us through high school. Since I really wanted to continue my education, I began to clean houses. However, given the situation in the country and the terrorist movements, my employers left for the U.S.A and I was left with nothing.

"Some friends and I got together with the idea of sewing arpilleria for other people. Soon I was making the whole piece on my own, and that's when I realized it was to become my life. To this day I cannot walk away from arpilleria, it is my world. After a while, I started working on my own and I take refresher courses when I can to keep up to date, and to improve the quality of my work.

"I remember that when I was in school I used to knit dresses for my dolls. One day a teacher gave me many colorful threads, which made me very happy because I was able to keep on knitting. I was only eight years old at the time, but it is a fond memory I always carry with me. Later, arpilleria helped me finish high school.

"I am thankful that I learnt arpilleria, because it provides my family with an extra income, especially during the time when my husband was out of work. The first time I had children they were twins who were born prematurely. Their health was very delicate but with the sales of my work I was able to buy the medicine they needed. Thanks to God, my children are now 15 years old. My husband learnt how to embroider and now he is my best assistant!

"I have taught my art to many people, and it gives me a great sense of satisfaction that others can learn from my work.

"I would like to show my appreciation to all Novica customers who support our work. What every parent wishes for is to provide their children with a professional career, and that is what I wish for my four sons. I thank God for giving me this opportunity."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
