Details

Brazilian artist Luiz Badia explores the realm of abstraction through geometric shapes, and with a palette of colors that includes ocher, grey, yellow and green hues. At the center, a triangle seems to appear within an eye seemingly shedding geometric teardrops. Badia paints with acrylics to create a composition of powerful artistry.

Meet the Artist

Luiz Badia

Luiz Badia

"Inspired by burlesque engravings of the 19th Century, by marionettes and by circus figures, I began to develop a more personal style."

"When people are young they think that earning a living from art is a heroic mission. It's like saying, 'I'm going to... the Himalayas!' A daring move. I believe that I couldn't do anything in life if it weren't related to art; I think I would be a total disaster. After a while, it is possible to construct a work and to live normally, just like any other profession.

"I began to work professionally with the Portuguese painter Mello Marques. At 14 years of age I had already sold in markets and been part of exhibitions. Under the guidance of my teacher, I went to study at the school of Fine Arts in Lisbon, Portugal, where I lived for five years. I met many artists, dancers, painters, writers, and musicians. It was then that I opened my own heart to the possibilities of art.

"Inspired by burlesque engravings from the 19th Century, by marionettes, and by circus figures, I began to develop a more personal style. They are exotic characters that suffer from a kind of deformation, because the images that we save in our memories aren't always true to what we really live. When we are drawing an object that is right in front of our eyes, we are able to reproduce it with realism. But if we observe it and only later try to represent it, it will be, without a shadow of doubt, a personal interpretation of the object. Our mind is capable of modifying anything. There are some artists I use as references: Munsch, James Ansor, Vemeer, and Aleijadinho, a Baroque Brazilian sculpture that often worked with deformed figures. All of this is mixed randomly in my subconscious and later influences my work. Oftentimes it takes me a year to conclude the idea of a painting, as they are very complex compositions.

"I am a teacher and president of the Association of Visual and Artistic Events in Rio de Janeiro. I really like to give workshops because I am a curious person and the doubts that my students present to me stimulate my mind. I advise my students to always surround themselves with good things, good music, good films, good painting, and good feelings. Without a doubt, this greatly influences the final result of the work. Participating in the association is very important in order to solve some of the most serious problems faced in Brazilian culture: the lack of space and incentive. Promoting interpersonal contacts with common interests is very enriching and helps to provide each artist's work with continuity."

Luiz Badia is a highly respected artist both within Brazil and abroad. His work has been exhibited in Brazil, Portugal, and the United States.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
