Details

This sculpture, comprised of moveable sections, is intricately hand carved from palo blanco wood and takes the shape of the Maya seed of knowledge called 'simiente'. Juan Ramon Flores of Central America says of his creation that its purpose is "sharing our cultural roots" with the world. With its carved nahuales and numerals from the Maya Calendar topped by a representation of the sun, this sculpture is an artful ambassador for the ancient Central American culture.

"What I love most about working with wood is that it allows me to convey all that I have in mind. Wood is such a noble material that it gives you the freedom to create whatever you want."

"I'm a friendly, honest and honorable Guatemalan artisan born to a lovely family who encouraged my interest in the arts.... I've always enjoyed working with wood, as a kid in school it was my favorite craft. To me, every school project was an opportunity to work with wood, and I always delivered a good quality presentable piece. I loved spending hours thinking about the design and how to make it.

"This passion continued when I studied architecture, especially when planning the models. I whiled away the hours thinking of the design and the materials. Can you guess which one was my favorite? Yes of course, wood!

"The end result would be so beautiful, with such exact measurements, that even my professors praised my work.

"Why do I tell you all of this? Well, because that's how I came to realize that wood and I have always gotten along really well. I believe it is innate in me. I've always been attracted to wood crafts and to experimenting with new techniques. I've learned so much about working with wood, that it offers me a way of expressing my feelings and ideas.

"What I love most about working with wood is that it allows me to convey all that I have in mind. Wood is such a noble material that it gives you the freedom to create whatever you want. The most challenging part is to get the wood's natural glow to come through – it's not all about sanding and varnishing. It's about coaxing the wood to share its charm.

"I have learned through time that not all types of wood work with everything and so through experimenting and trial and error, I have come to know about the different types of wood, their characteristics, and their goodness. Now I know what I can do with each type of wood.

"Talking with other artisans has also taught me a lot, as well as the people at the sawmills where I purchase the wood. The information is always out there if you're truly interested in learning.

"Most of my inspiration comes from the Maya culture and I try to use wood as a medium to convey the greatness of the Maya and their relevance. It's so important for humanity to know about the Mayas, their charm, their discoveries and their mysteries!

"My dream for the future includes having a well-equipped workshop so I can make many artesanĂas. My hope is that through Novica I'll be able to achieve another of my dreams: sharing my work with people around the world.

"Working by yourself can be challenging and yet at the same time it motivates me to achieve the goals I have set for myself, go after my dreams and above all, it allows me to do what I love to do most."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
