Meet the Artist

Titapa

"Our jewelry workshop enables the rural people in Lamphun to earn income throughout the year, especially during the off-harvesting season."

"The process of transforming my inspirations and ideas into a piece of jewelry excites me. I love it! Along the way is... the experimentation, which means I might end up creating something completely different from my original idea.

"My name is Titapa Tanskul but you can call me 'Joy.' I was born in Bangkok in 1984. I studied business administration, then industrial and interior design. Afterward, I completed my MBA. Today, I'm a jewelry designer and work with a marketing research company.

"I've always like crafting things with my hands. When I was in kindergarten, my teacher drew a picture of a mango and a mangosteen for me to color. I thought the way she drew it was so beautiful and, at that moment I realized I love art.

"During high school, I was an exchange student in the USA. I was scared of meeting and talking to new people even without a language barrier. I learned to fight my fear one step at a time. That experience made me who I am today, an open-minded person who never gives up and I'm afraid to chase my dreams.

"As I had an opportunity to experience diverse cultures, I realized that it is important to keep these valuable traditions and knowledge alive. I became a designer whose goal is to contribute to a sustainable society — to preserve local arts and crafts and to enable others to have better lives just as I was given that opportunity years ago.

"While the first step wasn't easy, it was interesting and exciting. I didn't really know what to expect and exactly what would be the right thing to do. I started by planning and discussing my ideas with friends. Then I just tried my ideas out and stuck with those that worked.

"Planning is the first step. There will always be uncertainties and challenges to overcome. Every day, I keep pursuing my dream and pushing myself further. The support I received from friends and family was always a big help.

"I read books and also learned local skills and techniques from rural artisans. I just keep practicing, doing and trying new things and exchanging ideas with others. Everyone I knew contributed to where I am now — they were all my teachers and, in return, I teach others by telling them about my experiences and sharing my knowledge, skills and ideas.

"My inspiration comes from nature, its textures, lines, shapes, and forms as well as from moods, cultures, and stories. The main material I work with is silver, as it is beautiful. It lasts for a long time and can be reused or recycled. I avoid using materials that are harmful to the environment.

"It can be challenging to find the way to transform my ideas into a physical object, and also to decide how to make the most out of the material I have and minimize any negative effect on the environment.

"I work with my friends. One used to be my design professor, Lucija Perko, and another is Mr. Ekachai Keawtia, a Karen hill tribe artisan who is a farmer as well as a silversmith. We divided the work according to who does each task best. So Lucija and I are responsible for the designs and crafting the prototypes while Mr. Ekachai shares his expertise and skills in creating the final pieces of jewelry. I met Mr. Ekachai through a friend who is a designer, so I visited his home and family and found that he was open-minded, willing to try new things and we could share ideas easily.

"Our jewelry workshop enables rural people in Lamphun to earn income throughout the year, especially during the off-harvesting season. This means they will be able to live happily and sustainably in their local community — able to be with their families, raise their children and provide for them with the knowledge that will give them opportunities to be what they wanted to be in the future. Local traditions, cultures, skills, and know-how are kept alive.

"I dream of using my design skills to preserve local arts and crafts and improve the life of others. I want to help rural artisans gain an adequate income throughout the year and live happily and sustainably with their families in their hometowns. And I hope you like my designs."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
