Meet the Artist

Juan Jose Ventura

"By acquiring our products, you will be helping several families who have dedicated themselves to this work for many years, and you will have a product 100% made by the hands of Maya K'iche'."

“I am Juan José Ventura Peliz, originally from Chichicastenango. I was born in 1972 and I am the third generation in the... elaboration of handicrafts as a profession. I consider myself an enterprising person and a leader. I achieved my dream of becoming a tour guide, and I frequently interacted with foreigners. So it was my goal to be able to interact with people from abroad and enter the world of handicrafts through the multicultural wealth of Guatemala. I stopped studying at the university to dedicate myself to work. Then I married, and finished university with two careers at the same time; that makes me proud.

“I learned this art with my parents because I grew up in the handicraft environment. Since 1970 my parents were pioneers of handicrafts in Chichicastenango, and I taught everything I learned to the people who work with us. We are a small family business, and currently we divide the tasks. I am dedicated to production and marketing; my wife to design. I started to work independently in 1990.

“The materials used are now more difficult to acquire, because labor is more scarce than ever. It gets more expensive every day, so in the last 20 years we have use recycled materials, such as huipiles (traditional blouses) and perrajes (shawls). We also use tools such as backstrap looms and standing looms. Our crafts are the reflection of our traditions, and beliefs. It is very important that we make our people known to the world. The simple fact of living in Chichicastenango--the folklore, the colors, the traditions--is my source of inspiration. Our handicrafts show the evolution over 4 generations, from the backstrap looms making fabrics in ancestral techniques, to using machines to be more competitive and reach larger markets in other countries. Making a living from handicrafts today is very difficult. My hope is to reposition my products with new designs in foreign markets. It is a source of pride to be an artisan of the Maya K'iche ethnic group and to be recognized in the international market. My experiences and challenges over the years have made me a better person.

“Currently we are experiencing the worst crisis in every sense; and the handicraft sector is one of the most affected and least attended to. We have to fend for ourselves, and it has been very difficult. Many of our weavers are giving up the trade to dedicate themselves to other areas, so we ask for your support to promote our handicrafts.

"Each piece involves the work of more than 5 people. By acquiring our products, you will be helping several families who have dedicated themselves to this work for many years, and you will have a product 100% made by the hands of Maya K'iche'."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
