Details

This colorful handpainted ceramic macaw will bring cheer to any room you choose to allow him to perch in. Mexican artisans Maria and Esteban use a bright and joyful color palette including pink, purple, turquoise, and yellow for the parrot's feathers and black highlighted with pink for the branch. An indention in the back makes it easy to hang the bird on a wall.

"At a young age, I learned to paint by watching my parents. I really liked it and I began to work with the help of my father. I focus all my attention on each detail in my work.

"When I began working with you in 2018, I had very few sales. I only made what I sold in the tianguis, or street markets. Gradually, I began to realize that offering my ceramics in this new way allows one to appreciate each detail of the artisans' work.

"My sales with you already represent more than 60 percent of my total income. I'm very happy and thankful, since this gives me the resources I need to raise my six children. You've allowed me to offer work to very close friends, thus teaching them a way to move ahead in life.

"I've exhibited my ceramics in craft fairs, where I received recognition for designs that I created. I feel very proud to show my work to more people and this motivates me to continue working.

"Thanks to all of you for your support and ideas that help me to continue to grow as an artist."

Original Artisan Story

Maria Santos and Esteban Guzman work in ceramic, creating home decor objects with the colors of Mexico.

"When I was still a little girl, my mother and father let me 'help' paint their traditional Guerrero-style clay figurines, Maria says. I loved to watch them work and learned everything from them. They were my best teachers.

"I remember when we moved to Guadalajara to work. No one believed that our painting and ceramics would sell. Without money to invest in materials, we were afraid it couldn't be done. But we began with what we had and reached a point where we sold so much we could buy a small piece of land and build a house for our family.

"Today, we buy our figurines and paint them by hand. We like how the colors combine, and we accentuate the statuettes with repeated dots, feathery lines and fanciful flowers. Our inspiration comes from nature and from our own imagination.

"Just like my parents did, I began teaching my children this art when they were young. After school, they liked to help us paint the background colors. Family unity is so important! For many years, all I ever did was work and work. Then one day, after Christmas, my children decided to take us out for the day and I was so happy being with them. I never thought it would be so lovely to laugh and share moments with them like when they were little ones.

"All of our designs are painted by hand with love and care. Our imagination takes shape in each one. Thank you for choosing them to decorate your own homes. We hope you like them."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
