This fun set of four ornaments is beautifully carved and painted by hand by Esteban Hernandez in Mexico. The artisan works in the style of alebrijes, a popular Oaxacan folk art form. Each of the four coyote ornaments is painted in a different color scheme.

“Imagination is essential to give shape and life to each figure."

“Hi, I'm Esteban Hernández. I learned the techniques of carving and painting wood through my parents and grandparents.... They taught us each step of the elaboration of each piece. Later, I dedicated myself to teaching my children, so that they can preserve this art that has been inherited from generation to generation, and spread it day by day.

“When we started working in this art, our dream was to create fantastic large figures. We wanted many people to know our work, to highlight our pieces through special techniques that were our own and authentic from our workshop. We worked with a lot of effort, and at the beginning we only exhibited the figures in a small location. But with the passage of time, we realized that little by little, with the help of our family, the pieces we have made have been well-received in the market.

“Imagination is essential to give shape and life to each figure. It requires a lot of dedication and patience, but above all, a lot of love and creativity. The main material to create the figures is copal wood. It is very easy to handle, as it is soft and practical when carving.

“What I like the most about work are the whimsical shapes that wood has and the fantastic figures that we can get from them, as well as all the shades of colors that we can make for each piece in terms of the decorations, the pointillism technique, the polishing and refining of each piece. We seek to characterize ourselves through fine finishes such as Zapotec fretwork, and create unique designs that identify us as a workshop.

“Our culture, beliefs and imagination give us the magic to create unique pieces and unusual figures which are currently not seen, such as the mixture of different animals or nahuales. Some classic, and some different, with the added value of that love and dedication with which we make our alebrijes.

“Finally, my family and I want our work to continue growing together through the art of alebrijes. This will allow us to provide job opportunities for young people from our neighboring communities, contributing to the economy of our area.”

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
