Vertical white and purple stripes create a bold impression on this distinctive knee-length skirt designed by Bali's Donald Wira Putra. Hand sewn from 100% cotton, the roomy skirt features a comfortable elastic waistband and two practical pockets on either side. The artisan creates the striped motif using batik, a traditional Indonesian dyeing technique.

"I love creating batik apparel because batik has been a part of Indonesian heritage for generations."I was born in 1977,... "I love creating batik apparel because batik has been a part of Indonesian heritage for generations.

"I was born in 1977, the second child of four children. My parents started creating clothing in 1974, so I grew up in an environment of sewing and batik. And I became accustomed to making clothing from the time I was little. My parents specialized in hand-embroidery and batik.

"Although my parents make clothing, they never forced their children to walk in their steps and follow them into this field. My parents raised us in a democratic way. They love us and support us in every decision we take. And they still love us equally, even though not all of their children are involved with clothing and apparel.

"However, I'm following in my parents footsteps and continue their works. Creating batik in traditional way is done using two techniques, both of which utilize wax. The first is batik tulis and is made using a canting tool, which is a special cone-like pen, to draw on fabric. The other uses stamps to make batik cap or 'stamped batik.' Our designs use both of these traditional techniques.

"Today, we have 45 people who work with us — 13 men and 32 women. And I coordinate creating samples before a piece of apparel goes into production. First, I make a batik pattern and select the colors, then make the batik into fabric. After the fabric is ready, we create samples. When we feel the samples are as good as the design, then we go to production. Our clothing is made with 100 percent cotton, and we also control the quality of everything we do. That's why our batik is awesome.

"Our designs are mostly inspired by the beautiful things around us, such as people walking, paintings, murals, interior design and other batik patterns. And we make sure each design is of good quality, since we want people who wear our apparel to be proud of what they wear and proud of our Indonesian heritage. That is one of our goals — we don't simply create clothing and then sell it. We also create our designs with love and pride.

"By creating and offering good batik, I hope to help people appreciate how complicated batik is and how batik is an art form. It is also our Indonesian heritage, full of the history and pride of our people. Thanks to you, I now have the chance to show the beauty of our batik to the world."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
