Baby alpaca in creamy ivory lends its luxurious allure to an elegant poncho. The first fleece of the season, baby alpaca is exceptionally warm. Knitted with rich textures, the poncho by Evelyn Monteza features a diagonal, asymmetrical hem. Meet the Artist

Evelyn Monteza

"Studying fashion design also helped me find myself and manage by creative impulses better. What helps me the most is listening to those who work with me, the artisans and technicians."

"I have always been interested in the ecology, all things natural and handcrafted. My hobby has always been breeding... animals and for a while I worked in the family business which had to do with the import and export of live fish.

"Guided by a desire to start something of own, I started working with artisans, creating my own designs. I wasn't thinking of starting my own venture in handcrafts however I soon realized the art world was offering me a wealth of possibilities that would, in turn, benefit the lives of artisans. All they needed was guidance with designs and have their works valued more.

"In 2007 I used all of my savings to set up a small shop, but I didn't know much about quality standards or about putting collections together guided by the current fashion trends. I realized I was lacking in experience and knowledge for such a venture and though we sold well the first year, the next one we had to shut down.

"I realized I needed to prepare better, so I decided to study fashion design. I worked hard to pay my tuition fees. I continued working with the artisans I already knew and sold our designs to other stores. But it wasn't easy: back then the world of alpaca apparel was exclusively about classic and conservative designs, and many stores turned me down.

"My studies helped me refine my style, clarify my ideas and create a collection based on sound criteria. I learned to be on top of the trends and increase my knowledge of them and find suppliers. I met a group of artisans who lived quite some distance away and for two years I drove the every other day, guiding them through the topic of design. But this sacrifice has paid off. I work exclusively with these artisans, who have improved their quality and are not afraid to try anything new.

"Studying fashion design also helped me find myself and manage by creative impulses better. What helps me the most is listening to those who work with me, the artisans and technicians.

"Something that baffled me was that while I was pregnant, I wasn't creative at all. Inspiration had left me and I even thought I had lost my artistic abilities. The doctor said it could be due to all the hormonal changes I was going through and sure enough, a few months after I gave birth, the ideas and inspiration returned – I was so happy!

"It happened while I was in the kitchen, cooking. I was thinking about a new collection and all of a sudden I was flooded with new ideas. It was such a great moment, that I called my husband and told him, 'I'm back designing again!' It wasn't such a great thing for others – only for me. It had been my greatest concern.

"The prime materials for our collections are mainly baby alpaca (season's first shear), alpaca, wool, and other fibers of the highest quality that our artisans can easily work with. For the future we envision increasing our workshop so we may be in a position to offer more work to artisans and so impact their lives in a positive way. We want to preserve our style, starting projects that become a dream, and then working to see them become a reality so customers are satisfied and look forward to receiving our products."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
