Details

Sacred to Mexican cultures, the eagle zealously guards its territory and family. The eagle is also Mexico's national emblem. "I designed this necklace after the pre-Hispanic belief in nahual animals. They symbolize human skills and strengths, as well as the challenges we might need to face," explains Flora María. The black leather necklace is centered by a highly detailed sterling silver eagle pendant and amber. The length of the necklace can be adjusted by sliding the knots along the cord.

Flora Maria

Flora Maria

"Designing jewelry has become my passion, and it grows with each passing day. It is my way of expressing what I love and believe in, such as ecosystems, nature and world cultures."

To her friends, Flora Maria is a highly creative and hard-working person whom they regard as a good friend. Born in... Guadalajara, she lived in the southern state of Chiapas were her two daughters were born. Chiapas is also the place that saw her start in the world of jewelry crafting.

Returning to Guadalajara was a personal challenge for everything that it implied, as well as having to start my work in jewelry all over again, the artisan recalls.

Now my dream is for my workshop to grow and for my work to be known, so that the people who work with me may also grow and have better wages.

I learned about jewelry making at a very young age from my family, however I never thought it would be something I'd want as my profession. I originally studied architecture but, when I moved to Chiapas I came upon Mexican amber and it awoke in me my dormant knowledge about jewelry.

I'm the third generation in a family of jewelers, and everything I know I owe to my father, Francisco Sanchez, who has long been another featured artist. He also taught me about perseverance, and about being original and creative in order to give life meaning. I inherited his zest for life too.

Designing jewelry has become my passion, and it grows with each passing day. It's my way of expressing what I love and believe in, such as ecosystems, nature and world cultures.

I've been dedicated to this art since the 1980s, and I've never stopped updating my models and designs. My interest in art is continuous, especially contemporary jewelry, and I enjoy exploring how to integrate new ideas. That's why I keep taking courses in a variety of techniques such as enamel with fire, wax, and those developed by master jewelers.

My preferred materials are sterling silver, amber from Chiapas polished by Mexican hands, and natural gems. I have recently begun incorporating leather in the design of bracelets and necklaces with power animals. And the technique I use most is lost wax.

Creating new collections is a challenge, but I am also passionate about planning it, coming up with a theme, sketching it, researching the best techniques and solving any complications may arise. I'm inspired by nature, world communities and Mexican culture in particular. I admire the riches of our planet, the flora, orchids, sacred plants and especially the animals that represent human values.

My daughters are a big part of my designs, to the point that some of my collections have been designed from their childhood drawings.

Working on my own has allowed me to take my creativity and work along the paths I chose. Now I work with a team of 19 wonderful women who contribute their own creativity and abilities to the crafting of my jewelry designs.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
