Artisan Made Arsana of Bali hand weaves a light and airy cotton shawl for men that is perfect for both casual and sophisticated looks. Blocks of color in denim blue are accented with russet and off-white stripes. The shawl is finished with a delicate fringe.

"Weaving and natural dyes are part of the cultural heritage of our country. The ancients used these techniques to make their clothes... we maintain this heritage."

"I'm Made Arsana Yasa, born in 1963 in Gianyar, near the eastern coast of Bali. My town is famous for its varied... handicrafts and is also one of the best preserved towns in Bali. Gianyar is rich with its traditional and cultural heritage and beautiful natural setting.

"My parents are conservative. My father is a civil servant and my mother is a homemaker. I always remember their advice. They told me, 'Face your life. You cannot depend on anyone but you have to find your goals in your own way.'

"I am married and God blessed us with two children. I'm just an ordinary man who is a hard worker, visionary and humble. My hope is to be able to live a decent and established life. I also hope that my children will be able to continue this work. They have been directly involved in it since they were 20 years old."

"After resigning from a company job in 1998, I decided to work in something friendly to the environment. I became involved with weaving and natural dyes. I began learning about it through books. I went to museums in Jogjakarta and also went to Pekalongan in Central Java to the Textile Institute of Technology to search more references, since none of artisans near my hometown do this work.

"And then I began a little research at home to find suitable dye materials that can work. Weaving and natural dyes are part of the cultural heritage of our country. The ancients used these techniques to make their clothes. For the procedures and materials, we maintain this heritage but we also modify it to shorten the process.

"My workshop has become quite large. We provide employment opportunities, especially for local residents. Currently we have 30 textile artisans and assistants in total — 18 men and 12 women.

"We've trained all the people who collaborate with us and we also offer a quick tour for those who want to know about the weaving process. In addition, we teach a class for anyone who wants to learn about the natural dye process.

"We use cotton that we get from Java. The base of our design is a woven stripe, and this fabric can usually be found in the southeastern part of Indonesia. We modify these woven designs and then the rest we explore again in accordance with our abilities."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
