Details

The slithering design of this necklace is from Rita de Catalán's "Maya Nahual" collection. "A nahual is an animal that accompanies a person through their spiritual life and connects them to the gods," explains de Catalán. "I designed this necklace after Kan, a feathered serpent that represents movement and symbolizes the great energy that created the universe." Crafted by hand of sterling silver, the original necklace features a large jade pendant as the head of the snake, and two smaller ones on the opposite side, crafted of two segments replicating the feathers of the quetzal bird.

Meet the Artist

Rita Ramirez

"What inspires me the most is nature with its flora and fauna, the beautiful sky over this country, the colors of the huipiles, the sun and stars, and the joy of being alive."

"I love working in this craft, the feeling of being inspired, the act of transforming my ideas into a piece of jewelry,... and the knowledge that each person will give its own interpretation of the piece. I love the challenge of waiting to see if clients like my designs and see them as a true work of art, and who feels beautiful when wearing it.

"I've always worked for international financial entities and I've always loved jewelry. But never did I ever imagine I would end up designing jewelry! I always thought I wasn't made for art, but then the opportunity arose for me to take a six-month long jewelry design course, and from there I took other courses. I learned a lot and I met a lot of people who have contributed to this process, though I believe I still have more to learn.

"I now have my own workshop and I would like continue learning more about designing and silverwork techniques so that eventually I could teach other women.

"When I was five years old I went to live with my grandparents after my father passed away. Growing up I spent time in the city and in the countryside where my grandfather had a farm. I remember my childhood fondly, though the death of my grandmother was extremely painful – she was like a loving mom to me. However I continued with my life and my studies, on the way to becoming an accomplished person.

"What inspires me the most is nature with its flora and fauna, the beautiful sky over this country, the colors of the huipiles (traditional clothes), the sun and stars, and the joy of being alive.

"I love being able to convey a message through my designs that makes them something more than an accessory. I want each piece to be meaningful to the person wearing it. I enjoy reading a lot about the theme I'm designing. I get an idea, I analyze all the features it needs to convey a message, and I sketch and sketch until I have the design I like. Some pieces require a lot of time, some less. It's a real challenge to combine aesthetics with a message.

"With each piece I create I'd like to convey the idea that we're all united under the same sky and we share the same air and land. Therefore, we are all interconnected by an invisible network that fills us with life and it is our mission, as human beings, to give our best and respect each other.

"I dream with seeing my designs being acquired by people all over the world, and so they will get to know my country, the richness of its flora, fauna and culture.

"I always believed I had no artistic talent since I had been working professionally in a very structured world. However, my daughters paint, my eldest plays the guitar and also loves making jewelry and so I realize now that it's something I've always had in me.

"Thank you very much for the opportunity of sharing my designs and my country's culture!"

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
