Isshaq Ismail of Ghana renders this bold abstract composition as a physical representation of his faith. "When we have faith in God, it is always well", believes the artist. The colorful and assertive brushwork is accompanied by the words, "It is well", along with traditional adinkra symbols. Adinkra symbols are visual symbols that were introduced by the Akan peoples; they usually represent proverbs or concepts.

The adinkra symbols in the painting include: gye nyame, a symbol of the omnipotence and immortality of God; boa me na me bao wo which translates loosely to "help me and let me help you", a symbol of cooperation and interdependence; and gyawu atiko, which represents bravery and valor.

Isshaq Ismail

I was born in the Central region of Ghana. I am a simple, hard-working and God-fearing person. I think that my painting... skill is an innate gift. When I was about 6 years old, I used to draw on walls the pictures I saw in magazines. After the completion of my basic education, I was walking at the Madina market and saw a man painting. It caught my attention. I approached him and inquired more about what he was painting. He said it was an abstract painting. The man told me about an art school called Ghanatta where I could learn more and get a certificate. I learned a little more from this man, and later enrolled at the art school. While at school, I sold some of my paintings to help me pay my school fees.

After college, I improved on my skills, and painted more semi-abstract paintings. I sold some of my paintings at the Art Centre. I had to donate my paintings to friends and family members just to become known as an artist. I had to sacrifice my time with friends to be able to focus and practice more to improve and master my skills. I work with acrylic paints on canvas.

One major difficulty I had to deal with was my parent’s disapproval of me pursuing an arts career. I remember when I invited my parents to my first exhibition in 2010. It was a moment when I proved to them that it was worth pursuing what I loved. They looked surprised at the paintings exhibited. From that day, they felt proud of me.

My favorite thing about my art is my choice of colors and themes. I find my choice of colors challenging, because I sometimes have to mix them over and over again to achieve them. I get my inspiration from daily life activities, children and life experiences. I work in partnership with an NGO to train under-privileged young people in rural communities in the creative arts. I have worked in several communities over the past 3 years, working with this foundation.

It is my dream to be one of the most influential artists on earth.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
