Details

Soft cadet blue and ivory are an appealing combination in this hand-crocheted acrylic bucket bag or mochila. Working to preserve their cultural identity and artisanal traditions, artisans of the Wayuu Community create the shoulder bag. The Wayuu are an indigenous people located on the La Guajira Peninsula in northern Colombia. Legend has it that a spider named Wale Keru taught a Wayuu woman how to weave and crochet. The unlined shoulder bag closes with a tassel-accented drawstring.

"To the Wayúu people, weaving and crocheting are a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and creativity."

"To the Wayúu people, weaving and crocheting are a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and creativity," says artisan Olga... Siosi.

The Wayuú Tribe inhabits the visually striking desert of La Guajira Peninsula, which borders Colombia and Venezuela. They live on rancheros, traditional settlements made up of five or six households, or rancherías, that together herd goats and farm crops. They are known for their weaving and crocheting skills, which produce elaborate belts, blankets, bags, and hammocks, among other heritage crafts. Their most popular handiwork is the mochila, a crocheted bag of varying sizes and functions.

Mochilas have been part of Latin Caribbean culture for centuries. Traditionally, they are made of either plant fiber or hand-spun wool, but currently Wayúu artisans rely more on commercial-grade Colombian cotton. Although the bag's basic shape remains a cylinder, it can be manufactured with different widths and heights depending on the intended use. The Wayúu use mochilas for all kinds of daily activities; it is not infrequent to see a farmer carrying as many as three bags at a time, on their shoulder, tied to their waist, or strapped to their donkey.

To make a mochila, the weaver—usually a woman—begins by crocheting a round base with a blunt-point needle. The sides of the bag are then crocheted and finished with a scalloped edge and tasseled cord. The straps can either match the color assortments on the mochila or differ completely from the bag, forming a decorative macrame strap called osonuchi. Men are usually responsible for making these types of straps by using a wooden needle or spindle in a process called layer splitting, whereby one cord is passed through the fibers of the others, creating a sturdy band.

Mochilas come in bright colors and often feature complex, clan-specific motifs that have been passed down from generation to generation through matrilineal families. The symbols crocheted on the bags reflect daily activities and important Wayúu beliefs. Bright stars, double-headed flies, and goat hooves are just a few of the many emblems used to illustrate the Tribe's way of life. When it comes to color combinations, innovation never flounders among the Wayúu. But when it comes to experimenting with motifs, there has been hesitation within the community; they prefer to conserve the symbols' original shapes and heritage.

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
