Details

Buddha's presence inspires a welcome sense of serenity in this photograph by Brendan O'Connell. Printed in black and white, the angle of the photo that captures the swirling clouds in the sky adds to the composition's sense of mysticism. This stuccoed stone sculpture portrays Buddha in the Bhumisparsha mudra posture, also known as "calling Earth to witness." Situated in Wat Sa Si, this depiction of Buddha is characteristic of Thailand's Sukhothai period (at the end of 14th century). Printed on matte paper, the photograph arrives in a pinewood frame with a protective glass pane.

Meet the Artist

Brendan O'Connell

Brendan O'Connell

"As a voyage progresses my enjoyment of experiencing new places is gradually surpassed by my desire to develop the films and print the photographs."

"My name is Brendan O'Connell and I was born in London on September 24, 1958. My blood is Irish and this has given me a... restless nature that makes it difficult to settle for long in one place.

"I left school at the age of 16 and spent eight years traveling and working (mainly on building sites) in Europe, Asia and North America. My constant companion was my camera. I then returned to college and enrolled in evening classes for a year before taking a BSc degree in Finance. After graduation I studied and trained for three years before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. Upon completion of my training contract I worked in international banking and spent the following 10 years working for a number of banks (mainly North American) specializing in Compliance.

"However, my true nature got the better of me, I returned to my spiritual roots by buying a house next to the sea in West Cork, Ireland. I lived in the house for a year and traveled throughout the West of Ireland (with camera always in hand) before the urge to wander returned once again. I have now spent a further seven years looking for a place to call home, with the last years spent mainly in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. I like Chiang Mai because it has a good mix of the old and the new: it is possible to spend weeks exploring old temples, and in the evening you can relax and enjoy the many modern conveniences that the city has to offer.

" I have enjoyed photography from the age of about seven, when I first 'borrowed' my Dad's camera. Throughout all of my travels, the first and foremost item in my bag is my camera. Whilst on a trip, my most important possession becomes the exposed film. As a voyage progresses my enjoyment of experiencing new places is gradually surpassed by my desire to develop the films and print the photographs.

"All of my photographs represent a feeling. Every time I look at a photo, I remember clearly what I felt as the shutter clicked – even after 30-plus years!

"I will feel great happiness if somebody looking at my photographs becomes curious about the tremendous cultural depth of Thailand and South-East Asia, and eventually have this curiosity grow to such an extent, that they actually visit the region to experience the historical sites for themselves.

"The journey is never-ending, because to live is to enjoy experiencing anew…"

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.
