Details

Artisan Manuela Gomez in Mexico designs and crafts this pretty blouse in a traditional style. The sleeveless top is made from beige cotton that was hand woven on a backstrap loom. The slightly squared neckline is adorned with rows of mixed embroidery stitches in brick red. Soft pleats beneath the front and back yokes give it a feminine, swingy shape.

"Our greatest influence comes from our Maya culture."

"In the small Maya town in Mexico where I was born, my family weaves beautiful brocade fabrics on the backstrap loom. As... is the custom, my mother began teaching me to weave when I was quite young.

"Every day after school, I helped her with simple tasks such as putting the yarns in order or choosing the colors to combine.

"It was common to see me weaving with my sisters on the backstrap loom, Each day, we'd practice with different colors, especially when it was time to create the heddles. At first, we constantly made mistakes but, with practice, we became able to create new brocade patterns ourselves.

"I especially like color combinations that you can weave in a straightforward way. My mother taught me that the most important thing is to set your imagination free and all the rest comes naturally.

"Our greatest influence comes from our Maya culture. I love our traditional clothing, especially the colors, the pompoms and hair adornments.

"For our regional dress, men wear a white shirt and pants woven of wool. The sleeves are red and are sewn to the torso of the shirt. The pants, or vex in the Tzotzil language, reach to just below the knee. Today, huaraches o caites — from the Nahuatl word, catli — are part of the formal traditional dress although earlier the wearer always went barefoot.

"Men who hold a civic or religious position in the community add a black wool poncho, a shoulder bag made of rope or nuti, a white kerchief or pok, and an impressive hat or pixol with ribbons of different colors hanging from the brim.

"Women wear a white blouse woven of wool with red or purple embroidery around the neck. They combine it with a dark blue wool shirt tied around the waist with a red band.

"At the beginning, I must confess it was difficult to create my own brocade designs, especially as far as feeling sure of myself. I learned to trust my ideas and my imagination. I also accepted the responsibility of finishing the weavings that I design, as I'm the only one who can do it.

"I always use synthetic felt fabric and wool yarn, always stitching it very meticulously so that my work is worthy of being purchased.

"Each one of my designs is crafted completely by hand. In the family, we all take great care with our work and choose the tasks according to each person's expertise.

"More than anything, I want you to see my work and, in this way, encourage my family even more to continue with this wonderful art that preserves our ancestral traditions."

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
