Details

By Miguel Angel Calero, this ceramic vessel depicts a woman of the ancient Chorotega people, a contemporary of the Maya, who were believed to be a cultural link between the civilizations of Mexico and of the Andes. Thus, similarities can be perceived in the motifs and colors. Crafted by hand, the terracotta figurine is a beautiful representation of Nicaraguan art.

"This represents the important role of the woman in the Chorotega culture," the artisan explains. "She sits on a jaguar, a feline symbol of fertility, power, strength and dominance. Its spotted coat symbolized the sky with its stars."

Miguel Angel Calero

"My inspiration comes from knowing that thousands of people have fallen in love with this beautiful art that seems to arise from nothing, from the clay hidden within the earth."

"I'm Miguel Angel Calero Gutierrez, born in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua on September 24, 1968. My path in this art... began when I noticed how pretty the work on a terracotta jar was! I was even more interested when I realized I was helping to preserve the cultural legacy of my ancestors because, through our ceramics, we can share the beauty of our pottery with the whole world. Our work with clay has been a legacy inherited by generations. And we're teaching our art to new generations just like my grandparents and parents taught me so that it's not lost in the future. My workshop has always been run by family and we continue developing this millennial art form.

"To become a master artisan, I had to work hard with much discipline. After learning, you have to put your skills into practice every day, since this is the only way we become better artisans. You must have a vision of what you want to achieve and work to make something different from what other local artisans are creating. Otherwise, everyone will make the same things and no one will stand out from the rest. It's important to not copy other artisans, because otherwise you can find yourself stuck in a rut, creatively. I studied different types of clay and took courses in contemporary colors and techniques. I did this to learn more and also to be able to be innovative.

"One of the most difficult times in my life was in 1998, when hurricane Mitch devastated our house. Our homesite was long and narrow, some of it fairly high. But much of it collapsed together with our homes. With the help of God who sends us work and customers, we've been able to overcome this tragedy that, fortunately, was only was a material loss, and no one in our family was injured.

"I consider myself to be a humble person, a good master artisan, and am always sincere and kind to others. In my future plans, I dream of establishing myself in the select international market so that I can give my family a better quality of life. I dream of my children getting ahead, going to college and becoming professional people.

"What I like most about my job is watching how easily you can create asymmetrical designs. Another thing I enjoy is the polishing technique that creates a glass-like shine. I've always been surprised by the high levels of quality you can achieve, and our pieces usually serve as home décor for families of all social levels.

"My inspiration comes from knowing that thousands of people have fallen in love with this beautiful art that seems to arise from nothing, from the clay hidden within the earth. It becomes a precious jewel with great cultural value and, at the same time, lets us artisans put food on the table."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
