Details

Sleek and modern, two stylish dogs come to life in mandarin orange. Carlos Angrigiani depicts the mom dog and her pup in a tribute to motherhood. He begins with modeling clay and adds successive layers of wax to create a prototype with the desired textures to make a mold. The final sculptures come to life in resin and cement, protected with a coat of varnish. "I like to think of creating these sculptures on a large scale as part of Mexico City's urban landscape," the artist confides. "They carry a message of family love."

Carlos Angrigiani

"I like simplified minimalist shapes and lines to define volume. My desire is to see my sculptures reproduced large scale and become part of Mexico City's urban landscape."

"I believe in the transcendence of art to transform lives. I began working in photography and this was my choice in... life. Afterward, I became interested in cinematographic photography and trained in directing the camera and cinematographic lighting.

"I wanted to travel and the possibility of going to Mexico came up. Then, in 2003, a friend and sculptor Paul Vaussane motivated me to make a sculpture in clay because he said I was always making things with my hands. He took me to a foundry where they gave me some sculpting wax and my friend said, 'Now you have to cast it in bronze.'

"I closed my eyes and let myself go. And I discovered a new form of expression I never thought I'd try but today it is a part of my life. It was rediscovering myself in a new and totally different form of expression.

"This forced me to read a technical bibliography, test materials, make models for trial and error, work for hours alongside people who work daily in metal casting. I had to see the work of other sculptors and practice with them.

"The materials I use are modeling clay, sculptor's wax for molding and, at the moment, I'm working with plaster. My sculptures are cast in bronze, molded of wax, or I finish them with resin. Sometimes, I combine the resin with wood.

"I buy modeling clay and, depending on the design, I prepare my own mixture with wax. The clay is very versatile to shape all kinds of images and the wax offers the possibility of fine features or textures that wouldn't occur as spontaneously with the clay. It must be at a temperature that preserves its elasticity.

"I begin with the clay and, after molding the figure, I make silicone molds. The silicone is applied in layers and the first layer must be liquid enough so that air bubbles are trapped in it. This results in a hole in the final piece, which must be filled and sanded.

"The final figurine achieved with a combination of resin and cement, and the resin has a catalyst that is added drop by drop, depending on the time it will take to mature. After the resin has hardened, the image is removed from the mold. Any imperfections are refined and smoothed with very fine sandpaper before I paint it with a base coat. Finally, I paint it with the desired color, and cover it with a protective coat of varnish.

"I like simplified minimalist shapes and lines to define volume. This is a challenge for me as it requires a synthesis that isn't easy to achieve. My desire is to see my sculptures reproduced to a big scale and that these become part of Mexico City's urban landscape, carrying with them a message of brotherly love."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.
