Marita Cornejo

"Once I touched [the alpaca], I was fascinated by its softness. I liked running my fingers through its fur. That year, we went back three times so I could visit the alpacas."

"I was born in the beautiful province of Arequipa, Peru in 1989. My country is blessed with a splendid geography and... beautiful cities in the Colca Valley with its terraced fields, colonial churches and snow-covered mountains, including the mighty Misti volcano.

"I'm a happy woman. I like to laugh and enjoy the simple things in life, like my family, nature and my work. I'm lucky to find happiness in everything I do every day, and share my happiness with the people who surround me.

"I'm also an optimist and I like to see the positive side of any difficult moment, even if it's just an opportunity to learn. I'm convinced that if we face our problems with a good attitude, we are part of the solution and not the problem. I like to think we don't have limits and we should always face our fears.

"Above all, I'm super responsible. When I commit to doing something or reaching a goal, I focus my effort and energy in what I have to do. Like everyone, I've faced challenges in life. One was moving to Lima, which meant getting a better job. I love my work and, when the opportunity arose, I didn't hesitate. However it also meant leaving my parents, sisters and young nieces behind. It was very hard at first and I had to get used to a new and larger city where I was alone. I came from a very close family and it was tough to adjust to being away from them.

"I visit my family whenever I can and we stay in contact all the time. Now, I can say I've gotten used to it, but being far from the people I love is always difficult.

"When I was around four or five, my parents took me to an animal fair and expo. While we were there, my mother asked me to pet an alpaca so she could take a photo. Once I touched it, I was fascinated by its softness and I liked running my fingers through its fur. That year, we went back three times so I could visit the alpacas. I'll never forget how happy I felt while petting that little alpaca. Since then, I visit farms or fairs to see them again whenever I get the chance.

"However, it wasn't until just before my college graduation that I was invited to work with textiles. When I visited the factory and touched the fibers, I was transported to that moment at the fair. I fell in love with my work, but now with a greater understanding — not only of that noble animal and its fleece, but also its historical legacy in Peruvian history and all its pleasant traits that make it one of the finest of fibers.

"I love the infinite possibilities of this art, and playing with colors, textures and designs. I'm passionate about alpaca; the fleece is ideal for autumn and is very warm for winter.

"I always recommend a piece of alpaca apparel because it's soft, fine and lightweight. It's hypoallergenic and not itchy. It's easy to take care of, has a long life and has many characteristics that make it ideal for your wardrobe. When you purchase one of our designs, you are supporting all of the families involved in its production.

"We need to preserve this historic legacy because alpaca textile art has existed since the Inca era when only royalty and nobles could wear this fine fleece."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
