Meet the Artist

Henry and Carlos

5.0 (artist rating)

"When we're designing we must always keep in mind that a person's lifestyle is a reflection of their identity and a way of being. More than following a trend, style is attitude."

"We're Henry Vega and Carlos Torres and our story starts with Domingo Vega and Estaurofila, his wife. Sharing an... adventurous spirit, they had the foresight to tool leather articles that would become renowned for their quality and exclusivity.

"Nowadays, and under their watchful eye and expert leadership, we are carrying on their dream. Henry developed a passion for leather at a very young age since he grew up around it, eventually assisting his parents both in the tooling of leather, and in the design of wallets, purses and belts.

"As for me, the idea of creating new models and combinations make of the tanner's art something that fascinates me, and soon I became impassioned about it. At first I was guided by curiosity and a desire to do things well that made me want to learn this art practically on my own.

"We focus on the design and in making sure the finished product is of such high quality that it will even surpass clients' expectations.

"During the late 1980's, the terrorism that had taken over Peru as well the political turmoil gravely affected the market. However, we were able to transform the situation into an opportunity by developing new strategies which included modifying our designs to keep up with the trends.

"When the crisis was over tourism began to increase, bringing with it admirers of our Inca legacy. This inspired us to create a variety of handcrafted products that would place Peru in front of the world's eyes.

"We work with the best tanners in the country and though every process has a degree of difficulty, we believe perseverance and dedication makes it possible for everything to flow in the best way possible.

"One of the places we most often go for inspiration is the past, it's just a question of redefining it. When we're designing we must always keep in mind that a person's lifestyle is a reflection of their identity and a way of being. More than following a trend, style is attitude.

"We believe that leather – on its own or as crafted piece – is going through a period of change in shape and engravings. There is more freedom in the motifs and colors, as well as in the volumes of crafted items.

"The constant innovation of our products is our response to a new developmental stage were the people in our team, as well as quality and originality, are the foundation that we need to successfully meet the challenges of the future, and contribute Peru's growth.

"We dare to dream about our success, which is so closely tied to our country's success. We are determined to keep our spirits high and we continue dreaming of a better tomorrow.

"When we look for artisans to join our team we pay close attention to their individual abilities so we may help strengthen them. We seek people with a positive attitude toward life and work, desirous to learn and keen to do things well. We believe our reputation for being loyal towards our team precedes us, as well as our perseverance in the face of adversity. We are well known for our passion to our craft.

"Nowadays our art, crafted by the hands of our team of artisans, is a way for us to show the world our years of experience, the effort and dedication that goes into each handcrafted piece.

"We invite you to join us and discover the intra-history of the products that seduce and impassion us. Precisely because we know what the effort and dedication that goes into each handcrafted piece means, we would like to submerge ourselves into the worlds of other creative artisans, learn from them and, from our little corner of the world, we would like to honor their magical hands for transforming an emotion, a feeling or an idea into a beautiful object."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
