Manjuri Hazarika designs an eye-catching shoulder bag from India, crafted by local artisans of cotton in a solid sea green color. Block printed square motifs in peacock adorn the surface of the bag, opening at the top with a sheesham wood button to a cotton lining in avocado. A zipper pocket and an open pocket are found on the inside of the handbag, perfect for storing small items.

"We encourage Assam weavers to develop new designs inspired by their own creativity and we offer some design inputs if needed."

"I was born in Assam, and I grew up watching mother stitching beautiful items for our house from the left over fabric... pieces. During her spare time she would draw and plot her designs for woven patterns. She has been a big inspiration for me as I became drawn towards the creative field.

"Weaving is the major craft form in Assam. People in this part of India do not do much of embroidery; they weave colorful patterns which can very well be referred to as embroidery on loom.

"Life has not been a bed of roses for me. As I graduated from a lesser known design school, it was very difficult for me get a good Job and utilize my creative potential. Thankfully, I got a chance to assist well-known designers in the industry. This experience gave me a lot of confidence and self belief.

"In May 2010, I started my dream project Kritenya with a small group of people who were working in Delhi but had our roots in Assam. What brought us together was our shared love for handloomed and other handicrafts from the North East region of India.

"When we visited certain fairs and other events, we were very disappointed to see that the weavers were not getting their due recognition. They could not handle the pressure of modernizing the craft while keeping the tradition alive. That is how we decided to dedicate our time and effort into getting these craftsmen new markets and the appreciation they deserve.

"We source all hand-loomed fabrics with beautiful patterns from the remote areas of Assam. The weavers are mostly women who support their families with the income they generate from weaving. It is very difficult for them to understand international standards. Most of them have stopped weaving the traditional patterns, as power looms are taking over.

"We work directly with the weavers and encourage them to continue their craft, while also making them aware of quality requirements. We encourage Assam weavers to develop new designs inspired by their own creativity and we offer some design inputs if needed. This way, our products retain a good blend of traditional and modern sensibilities.

"Our main endeavor is to grow together with the artisans who are associated with us. We are very thankful to Novica for showing faith in us. We strongly feel that Novica customers will help us in our mission of supporting a large number of women weavers."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
