Realistically carved from reclaimed teakwood, this delightful elephant indulges in a moment of play. Crafted by Jedsadaporn of Thailand, this statuette is a gentle tribute to Asian elephants who are severely endangered in the wild and need our loving protection. Elephants are sensitive and intelligent creatures, and this sweetly expressive, hand carved example brings a smile wherever he goes.

"This art takes advantage of the natural wood and each piece has a unique nature."

"I'm Jedsadaporn Traijak. I was born in 1983 in Chiang Rai — Thailand's northernmost province. My parents were peddlers... who purchased ready-made garments from Bangkok to sell at the weekly markets in many Chiang Rai towns.

"Every year since childhood, I'd go along to help them. It was fun because there were always exciting things for me to play with at the market, like a carousel, swings and a target shooting game. But I also learned to become a market woman who is energetic, active, diligent and regularly finding opportunities.

"After receiving a vocational certificate in accounting, I graduated with a BA in business administration at Chiang Mai. There, I met and married my husband, who was interested in mushroom cultivation. We helped each other to build a mushroom farming project which has been successful because, except for sprouts, no other crop can be harvested as quickly as mushrooms, and they sell well. Since we both are always learning, we've established the mushroom farm as a learning center for the community, to share our knowledge with others.

"But I discovered that the traditional art of wood carving was going to be lost in my husband's community. Grandmothers who came to learn mushroom cultivation at the center told us that the wood carving tradition had been a part of the community for their entire lives. They said that back then, life was very hard and incomes were low. Each person only had three sets of clothes. Then an instructor came and taught them carving arts as a way to generate income. The first-generation students were all women.

"I was very interested and do not want the community's traditional occupation to be lost. So I consulted with my husband and he agreed to set up a wood carving workshop.

"I studied the characteristics of the works and brought wood left from furniture crafting, such as slabs or even roots to carve home decorations, such as elephants, birds, fish, and small ornamental pieces. Then I found good skilled people who inherited the wood carving art, and am sharing the knowledge from courses I've been taking on product development. All of the process creates value from wood that might otherwise be wasted.

"Although I'm not a real wood carver, I'm very proud to have the opportunity to learn and socialize with these artisans. I am happy to have a part in helping to promote and preserve this ancient art.

"I opened a small shop to distribute the community's art work, and recently, a group of wood carvers gathered to create jobs for the community. Now the people don't need to go far from home to work but can make a better living here and — more importantly — can continue to perpetuate the craftsmanship legacy.

"This art takes advantage of the natural wood and each piece has a unique nature. For me, this is not a defect, but a creation of a very special nature in wonderfully exclusive works.

"We hope you all enjoy our designs and take part in preserving the local art of Thailand."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
