Details

Crafted by Robert Aidoo-Taylor from West Africa, this marriage ceremony fan mimics the style of those used in the palace of the Ashanti King's in Kumasi. The traditional fan is created with a vinyl board covered with cotton material meant to depict black and brown waves. The handle is covered with rattan and polyester cords. A regal aura emanates from this original decorative piece.

“In 2009, I joined NOVICA. I am a jewelry artisan.

“A lot has changed since I joined this wonderful institution. I joined as a bracelet maker, but the kind of guidance I had from NOVICA helped me to widen my imagination. To a large extent, my finances have improved since joining NOVICA. In the beginning, even purchasing raw materials for production was an issue for me. NOVICA came to my aid right away with a micro-credit loan which I used for production of both new products and replenishment.

“As the years go by I have trained 8 artists, of which 5 are females and 3 are males. My talent has not just been polished; also my finances have seen a tremendous change. Over the years I have had a lot of successes; now I have platforms to showcase my talent.

“10 years from now, I want to start up a school to train young artists who can work in the arts industry in years to come.”

Original Artisan Story

"My name is Robert Aidoo-Taylor, and I was born on December 30, 1967 in the central region of Ghana. I attended elementary and middle school in Ghana, and junior secondary school in Nigeria. I returned to Ghana to finish high school.

"I am a self-taught artist. I never took any classes or attended courses. I use manual tools to carve my pieces from wood and then I paint them myself. I enjoy working alone, and my inspiration comes from nature.

"The greatest challenge that I have faced in my life is when I wanted to further my education, but I couldn't afford to do so and had to struggle. I turned to carving as a profession and now I have exhibited my work abroad, including Berlin, Washington, D.C., and Detroit.

"I have taught others too, especially about making collage works with veneer woods and rattan weaving.

"One of my favorite things in life is to explore nature and spending time with my wife and two daughters. One of my dreams for the near future is to become an art lecturer, even though I was never able to go to art class myself."

In 2012, Robert ventures into the realm of handcrafted jewelry. "I explored the use of wood, waxed linen, synthetic cords and other media to make bangles, bracelets and necklaces. I have developed many designs so far, and I am so thrilled about this new venture! I have always used wood in my art and it's exciting to be able to add other materials to achieve something interesting."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
