Women Rebuilding through Co-operatives

Some women play the role of not only taking care of their household—the kids, the domestic chores, etc.—but also contributing to the household financially through work. However, this case does not often extend into impoverished and less fortunate countries… but that is changing for the country of Rwanda.

Today, craftswomen and farmers in Rwanda have joined and even can be seen leading the effort, to help increase empowerment, food security and equality in the country.

With the help of the Improved Food Security project, previously vulnerable women have been given the opportunity to be incorporated into co-operatives. Prior to the co-operatives, individuals worked solo with hardly enough food being available to feed their family. Since the co-operative, an increase in machines allows them to get market for their produce and food for their families.

The change has also given the participating women a sense of pride and responsibility as they now contribute financially to the household as well.

So what’s next? According to Action Aid, an international organization working to help countries suffering from poverty and injustice, the next step is to help these women farmers obtain proper certification to export their products. We all can do our part to help.
