"I was quite determined to succeed and forged ahead – I was not going to be defeated by problems. These are sacrifices that fill your soul when you see the customers' satisfaction."
"I'm from Huancavelica and when I finished school I started working in a silversmith's workshop as an assistant. That's how I managed to pay for college. With every passing day making jewelry became my main activity.
"My arrival into the world of jewelry was a fortuitous event – a happy coincidence that has become my life. I moved to Lima so I could apprentice with a master silversmith who at the time was training young people with a thirst for learning. I continued taking courses and perfecting my technique.
"It was very difficult setting up my own workshop. I started with a loan from a relative, and for the first five months I didn't make any money – I had to invest it all in my work. Fortunately my parents were incredibly supportive.
"I remember the time when I stayed up working throughout Christmas Eve to make sure I finished an order in time. I was quite determined to succeed and forged ahead – I was not going to be defeated by problems. These are sacrifices that fill your soul when you see the customers' satisfaction.
"Not having all the tools and the funds to buy them made it difficult to get started, especially when working 10 hours a day, including Sundays and holidays. Thankfully, my brother was of great help.
"Our hard work has paid off. My four siblings, my wife and a few collaborators are now part of my team and we work with fine and sterling silver. We are constantly trying to create more job opportunities and reap more benefits. Many of those who once worked with us have now set up their own workshops and sometimes we work together.
"We would love to be known as one of the best silver workshops in Peru, so that’s the goal we’re striving for, as well as opening our own jewelry shop."
