Myres Quainoo

Myres Quainoo

"I get my inspiration from dreams, intuition and looking at works of past craftsmen, as well as from the interaction with people."

"My friends say I am one who laughs a lot when not working, the type of person who is too serious with the people I work... with, and one who doesn't fool around when at work. Myres Quainoo is my name, and I was born on August 4, 1955 in the central region of Ghana. My type of craft is wood carving.

"When faced with obstacles, I think about ways of overcoming them. I got into this craft when I started school, as it was located in an area where handcrafted items were made and sold.

"I was taught by Master Musa, the oldest living master craftsman in the country. I had to train continuously and practice constantly in order for me to master my craft.

"Starting on my own was quite strenuous since I had nobody in the immediate family to look up to and inspire me. The materials I use for my works are earth stains, recycled aluminum plates, beads and wooden polish.

"My favorite item to craft is hand-carving wood masks, and the most challenging one is weaving the baskets and basket ware.

"I get my inspiration from dreams, intuition and looking at works of past craftsmen, as well as from the interaction with people. I look out for artisans who are truthful and responsible to join me and craft my designs. My craft has created employment for my community.

"My hopes and plans are to establish a training center to take care of children on the streets."
