"I'd be untruthful if I told you it's been easy. But satisfaction goes hand in hand with hard work."
Update (August, 2019)
“It has been a little while since I met NOVICA. For me it has been very important to be able to transmit the processes of the art of pottery. In the state of Chiapas where I live there, are very rich communities in the knowledge of this art of yesteryear. For me it is vital that this beautiful tradition of mud is known and preserved, which are also an example of preserving the environment. And NOVICA has opened the doors to places we could not have reached.
“”We have kept our processes intact, so that it has allowed us to be constant and focused on quality. One factor that has been a beautiful challenge is the climate, since the process depends on the sun, humidity, cold etc. What fascinates me most about my work is knowing the basis of these artisan techniques, knowing their secrets. It is very satisfying.
As a collaborating group, we continue to work constantly. We are planning a remodeling; which will allow us to work in a larger and more comfortable space. It is essential that each of our craftsman have a space that allows him to be in touch with that inspiration.
“As I am in a collaborating group of artisans, I am in a civil association called “citizen laboratory”, where we work on shared concerns. This has allowed me to support artisans more firmly to fulfill their dreams. And more than anything, knowing one’s needs, knowing what your biggest motivation is and working from there to improve.
“Now my project is to create experimental workshops, to impart knowledge regarding materials, techniques and designs. And in this way to work hand in hand to create new designs.
“I am very happy that through NOVICA we continue to grow and make our work and mission known.”
Original Artisan Story
"I consider myself a brave woman, independent and with a vibrant passion for handicrafts, especially textiles.
"But it was ceramics that captivated my heart. I fell in love with all aspects of this art. I especially like the possibility of creating what my spirit desires with absolute freedom.
"Thanks to the artisans with whom I have a special connection, step by step I've been able to learn the essence of this art. This is a magical project. Today we are reinforcing it together with artisans from a nearby village.
"The crafting process is fascinating. I love to see how we combine the different types of earth.
"I believe my greatest inspiration is the essence of Mexico, our gastronomy — especially the delicious smell of coffee. This gives me a beautiful connection with our precious roots in the Tzotzil Maya culture.
"I'd be untruthful if I told you it's been easy. But satisfaction goes hand in hand with hard work. This is why I feel fulfilled by the simplicity of creating an object of everyday use. I want to convey the importance of connecting with our roots.
"I'm involved with every aspect of our designs and I love working alongside the artisans.
"My goal for the future is to form a training center in the town where I was born. I want to continue sharing this beautiful art in a special way.”
