"This is more than an art or a business; this is the preservation of the beauty of butterflies that are a beautiful creation of God."
“My name is Rebeca Gómez Moreno, and I am a Costa Rican jewelry designer. I had the happiness of being born and growing up in a beautiful country, recognized throughout the world for its variety of flora and fauna. Since I was little I was passionate about nature; there is nothing better than to appreciate so many animals and plants, their colors, and the smell of damp earth. But there was something that always attracted me more than other things: playing with insects, chasing lizards, catching ladybugs, examining them and wondering ... Where does this beauty come from? How is it possible that nature creates such extremely perfect life forms?
“Since I can remember, the butterflies were my main focus of attention, that beauty, the patterns, the lines, their shape, their delicacy, their silky wings, all perfection in the air. I remember that once I visited a small butterfly garden for the first time; it was pure magic! Growing up one begins to experiment, and I realized that I was good with my hands, and that I had a creative mind. That's when I started to make jewelry. Without realizing it, I started a small business in school, and in the university I sold jewelry to my classmates.
“Each piece I made was something unique. I experimented with a variety of materials, such as semiprecious stones, glass, feathers, flowers and leaves. One day, visiting the butterfly farm again, I paid attention only to the ground, and I asked myself: What happens when they die? I saw many butterfly wings rotting, disappearing in the grass, becoming nothing...An idea began to revolve in my mind--the idea of preserving them forever. I began to work on that project for 6 months, and when my idea finally came to fruition, I was amazed. Two of my passions had united in order to preserve a species of nature.
“I am really happy to be able to present my art to many people. This is a totally handmade art. The found wings of butterflies are the raw material; we obtain them from the butterfly gardens around Costa Rica. This is more than an art or a business; this is the preservation of the beauty of butterflies that are a beautiful creation of God.”
