Feline intrigue defines this composition by Andre de Miranda. A father and son stroll mysteriously across night's background, interrupted by flashes of white tracery, their movements synchronized masterfully. Says the artist, "I lived for four years in Tres Lagoas, in the interior of Mato Grosso in east-central Brazil. This series related to animals was developed in this period of my life. It is an arid region of fantastic beauty and a very hot climate. They are creatures inspired in the animals that I saw, but in truth they are creatures of the unconscious, they are the face of solitude, of fear, in short the infinity of animals we create internally." This work is executed using linocut techniques, excavating the design before printing it in offset typographic ink on paper.

This work arrives unframed. The artist suggests that the linocut should be protected from direct sunlight and should not be stored in a humid environment. The frame should not include a glass covering as this may cause eventual damage to the paper.

"I don't carve with force, I carve with fury. The art of the xylograph is fury. Different from painting, which is... realized using a brush that slides across the canvas, the xylo is a naturally violent technique that is executed through subtraction. Tree bark ripped from the matrix originating the negative tracery that will be the impression on the paper. Each original xylograph carries with it the vestiges of this violence, which can't be hidden. It is there that the tool employed is seen, scars that appear in my work.

"The technique of xylographs, or woodcut prints — in Greek 'xylo' means wood — results from direct manual incision into the wood, utilizing implements like gouges, knives, and chisels. Each implement corresponds to a type of furrow left in the wood. It is a technique that allows for surprises as opposed to painting, which materializes little by little. In engraving, one only knows what has been made at the end of the process.

"Almost all artists pass through a phase of engraving, but very few remain faithful to this art. I've been making engravings since 1976; I was lucky enough to learn by frequenting great workshops with the best engravers in Brazil. The xylograph is an expression very characteristic of Brazil. It is a simple and cheap way of reproducing images, which has been used since the 9th century in the Orient, and was officially brought to Brazil with the royal press at the beginning of the 19th century. But already in the 16th century, the time of the discovery of our territory, the Kaiapo people had employed the principals of xylographs, using wooden stamps, upon whose surface were engraved designs to be stamped on the skin to adorn themselves for festivals and rituals. But it was in the 1930s that xylo arrived on the national scene due to the hands of the artist Goeldi. Among popular arts, the xylograph is the traditional illustration of the little pamphlets of poetry, popular poems sold in the streets that tell of life in the northeast.
br>"My work is inspired by diverse themes; everything is a pretext for an artist to create. I am a teacher of this technique and I always say to my students that engraving is not a stamp; each one is different from the next."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
