Carved of Makrana marble, this sculpture from India showcases Manish Jalwal's admirable artistry. He evokes the grandeur of the Mughal Empire as he paints the sculpture by hand with remarkable detail. Gold leaf applications emphasize the royal nature of this elephant as it carries on it is back a majestic howdah with the king inside.

Marble quarried at Makrana is regarded as a high quality marble that tends to acquire an ivory hue with the passing of time.

"One day, while at my cousin's place, I saw beautiful paintings on marble plates and it immediately struck me that I could do my painting on marble plates, boxes and vases."

"I have been always very fond of tradition and this passion has been my driving force bringing me where I am today. I... "I have been always very fond of tradition and this passion has been my driving force bringing me where I am today. I come from the majestic city of Jaipur and I am proud to be a part of the many artists working to promote internationally the traditional crafts of Rajasthan.

"My rendezvous with traditional crafts happened when I was very young. My elder brother was already in this trade, as a master carver making beautiful wood sculptures. His work always inspired me but I never really got the chance to try my hands at carving.

"Then one day when I was about 20 years old, I went on a tour around Rajasthan with some friends and saw the majestic architecture in our state. The monuments, havelis (private mansions) and every building in sight was so alluring! I always felt connected to the past. After I returned home, I started painting the beautiful monuments that I saw – not only the monuments but the engravings and paintings on these monuments and all my friends and family really appreciated my work. I thought to myself why not use this passion of mine to earn my bread and butter?

"One day, while at my cousin's place, I saw beautiful paintings on marble plates and it immediately struck me that I could do my painting on marble plates, boxes and vases. This is when I decided that I wanted to work full time as an artist. I started painting on marble plates, sculptures and vases. This was very well appreciated by many people and the journey since then has been a good one.

"Then, this was only half a battle won… how could I market my products? I needed to be able to sell them to support myself. So I started visiting emporiums and handcraft offices and they liked my products, and this is how I started selling them.

"It's been 20 years now and its feels so great to be able to do what I love. My dream is to go globally and promote the beautiful traditional work of Rajasthan through my craft. All my paintings are inspired from the traditional style of painting. It celebrates the festive nature of our state. I hope that Novica customer appreciate my work and support me.

"For my work, I use natural makrana marble and use real gold leaf paint. I also use poster colors to add vibrant touch to my piece. And now I have been able to offer jobs to seven artisans who are working with me."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
