Juana de Arco Valderas Puch preserves Yucatan's legendary hammock weaving tradition assisted by Taller Maya. "Here in Yucatan, we prefer to sleep on a hammock than a bed," explains the skilled weaver. She weaves the bright orange cotton hammock by hand, expertly forming discreet diamond patterns.

Hand wash by hooking the loops over a clothes hanger, leaving it outside of the basin or bucket. Leave the hammock to dry stretched out, in the shade.

Maya Workshop

"Despite gender roles in her community, Doña Landy forged ahead even when facing financial difficulties. Yet she provided for her family through the crafts she was making at the workshop."

"We're a project borne from the work of Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya, and we work with about 200 Maya artisans in... the Yucatan peninsula. Our mission is to promote the development of Maya communities to ensure a better quality of life for them, as well as to foster opportunities for education, health and social well being.

"At first it wasn't easy getting the artisans to trust our project, especially since according to Maya customs it's not acceptable for women to work in handcrafts. Also, they weren't used to work as a team, so we developed different training workshops for them.

"Since then we have been presenting different projects to benefit the Maya communities with a view to creating jobs for them in handcraft workshops. These include weaving on pedal looms and filigree jewelry.

"Handcrafts are an intrinsic part of everyday life for the Maya people, so this project aims at rescuing and promoting the traditional arts and crafts of the Yucatan peninsula.

"Throughout these years we've been fortunate to overcome the challenges we have encountered, and thanks to our hard work we can tell the quality of life of these women artisans has improved. And not only that, they have garnered respect and recognition through the work they do.

"We are very proud of Doña Landy, whose story is amongst the ones that has moved us the most. Despite gender roles in her community, Doña Landy forged ahead even when facing financial difficulties. Yet she provided for her family through the crafts she was making at the workshop. Thanks to her, other women have found a way to get their husbands involved, and now they are working at the workshop too.

"Another reason for feeling proud of our achievements is the international recognition of our mission and hard work. In 2007 we received the To Do! Award at the World Tourism Fair in Berlin for our efforts in social responsibility through Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya, and in 2009 we received Condé Nast's World Savers Award for our social and environmental commitment, and our contributions to the relief of poverty."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

 

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

Sash tie length

Lay sash/tie out flat away from the garment and measure from end to end.

Belt with buckle

Measure from the end of the pin of the buckle (where it touches the buckle) to the middle hole.

Belt without buckle

Measure from the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This is will give you the medium size of the belt.
