Meet the Artist

Shephali

4.0 (artist rating)

"I am proud to mention that our organization has been honored with two National Awards for Artistic Work, in 1992 and 1999."

Shephali and Puspa, interviewed here, are both members of Sunderban Khadi and Village Industrial Society (SKVIS). This... non-governmental organization instructs women from West Bengal in a variety of arts and crafts. The organization's goal is to help women become self-sufficient, training them in professions so that they can better provide for themselves and their children. Shephali is one of the organization's founding members and is its vice-president. Puspa is a newer member. She works as a trainee.

Hello, I'm Shephali, and I'm a founding member of Sunderban Khadi and Village Industrial Society. In 1978, I got together with my friends Tanushree Roy, Anima Mondal, Bulu Raha and Sushama Mistry to form this organization. Our main concern was to empower women economically through training in different areas, to help them become self-sufficient.

We organize training camps throughout the year, with a huge turnout each time. We focus on textile arts, which include the weaving and printing of textiles such as stoles, scarves, sarongs, saris, and wall hangings. Over the years, the women who participate have become expert designers. Today, more than 95 women are enrolled in our courses.

We derive great satisfaction seeing so many people benefit from our efforts. We are constantly searching to expand, to invite more people to join us. Apart from providing training courses, we promote our members' crafts through numerous exhibitions held locally and nationwide. So far, some of our biggest exhibitions have been held in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata, and in many other states and districts.

I am also proud to mention that our organization has been honored with two National Awards for Artistic Work, in 1992 and 1999.

Our plans for the future include the introduction of new styles. We would also like to show the designs the women make to a larger, international audience, so we are grateful to you for assisting us with this endeavor.

* * * * *

Hi, my name is Puspa. I was born in 1958. I never got the chance to go to school, as I had to stay at home and do the housework. Then, I got married and had two children. Sadly, my husband died a few years after we got married, leaving me alone with two children to look after. Since I had no education, it was difficult for me to get a job.

The only thing that mattered to me were my children. I could have lived without food but I could never have let my children starve. It was then that I chanced upon SKVIS. They trained me and helped me become a professional. I'm proud to say that, today, I am totally self-sufficient and that other women who were even less fortunate than myself are also doing well.

We specialize in designing and printing on materials such as silk, cotton, and other fabrics. Batik is one of our primary printing techniques, and we have mastered this art. We create many accessories, including stoles, scarves, and beautiful textiles, which are later made into dresses and saris. I feel very fortunate to have come across SKVIS, and I am quite excited at the prospect of getting international exposure for our work with your help. This is a brilliant idea!

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.

BUST / CHEST

Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
