Details

Working hard under the sun, a man cuts off the leaves of the agave plant so he can distill the core to make tequila. He is known as a jimador and he appears in card 14 of Marina Pallares' exclusive interpretation of Mexico's lotería. It is a unique version of the classic bingo game featuring traditional images. The loteria made its appearance in the second half of the 18th century, and it is still a favorite at schools, fairs, carnivals and festivals. "I grew up in Jalisco, known for the production of tequila from agave plants, and as a child I used to play lotería all the time. These two facts inspired me to create the 'Tequila Lotto' series," confides Pallares, who credits the influence of Leopoldo Méndez and José Guadalupe Posada in her work. She masters aquafortis and aquatint etching techniques to create this eloquent composition.

Meet the Artist

Marina Pallares

Marina Pallares

"I don't like labeling myself or my work, so as soon as someone else tries to place me in a category or classification, I rebel and I change."

"Born in 1980 in the Mexican state of Jalisco, I have always enjoyed painting and drawing. All through school, starting... with nursery, I enjoyed art classes the most. I think painting has always been my destiny, because throughout my life, certain unexplainable things keep happening that lure me to the path of the fine arts.

"When I was 13 years old, I began to paint more frequently. I've been dedicated to painting, drawing and printing since 2000, and in 2004 I graduated in Visual Arts with a concentration in painting. I have taken numerous courses on a variety of techniques, including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, encaustic, graphite, charcoal and prints. I have studied with renowned Mexican artists, such as Alejandro Camacho, Enrique Ruíz Rojo, Jose Luis Malo and Gustavo Alvarado.

"I have exhibited my work individually and collectively in Jalisco, San José del Cabo and Hamburg, Germany.

"I define myself as an eternal seeker. I don't like labeling myself or my work, so as soon as someone else tries to place me in a category or classification, I rebel and I change. I'm not a 'rebel without a cause,' it's just that it's early in my career and it would be dangerous, professionally speaking, to label me already.

"I enjoy having the biggest array of instruments available to express myself. In other words, I adapt techniques according to the theme that I'm working on. I am very careful about my work, and I don't suit mainstream contemporary art because I think it is distant from the viewer. Let's just say it seems to suit only the few who can understand complex concepts.

"I prefer to paint so that the majority of the people can understand and appreciate my work, and that my technique draws their attention. On the other hand, I don't want it to seem like something improvised that anyone could do. My focus is making works of art of good technical quality, with a concept, with feeling, and as creatively original as possible.

"I like realism, surrealism, impressionism and most other '-isms.' My favorite artists include Vincent Van Gogh, Remedios Varo, Leopoldo Méndez, Picasso, Francisco Corzas, Rufino Tamayo, Gustav Klimt, and Toulouse Lautrec. And, my favorite techniques include linocut, oils, graphite and mixed media.

"Most of my themes revolve around people and ordinary activities such as drinking coffee, riding a bike or dancing. Although sometimes I can be more complicated and express my dreams, my feelings, and other personal issues.

"Fine Arts to me symbolize the engine that makes me get up every morning."

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

NECK

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
