Details

Inchoate clouds swirl in a roiling universe inspired by a dream. Deep blue evokes mystery and awe, while a blazing star is mesmerizing. Whirling like the Milky Way, stars unite in luminous clouds in this elegant oil on canvas. Rungsak Dokbua paints a fantasy series that exalts all of nature – sea, sun and mountains, stars, clouds, sun and moon. "Humans' life is like that undersea," he says. "There is movement. Sometimes it is calm, sometimes stormy, but it is never ending. The fiery star symbolizes the meaning of life. Everything in the universe has the power to make things happen, either bad or good.

Meet the Artist

Rungsak Dokbua

Rungsak Dokbua

"It's an amazing time for me… My son is my answer… with him I feel alive."

"Can you believe it? One life can change everything for another life. I want to talk about my son who was born with... tenderness, liveliness and kindness to bring to my life too. He has a tremendous influence on me – even for my art.

"Sawasdee krab. My name is Rungsak Dokbua and you can call me 'Rung' as well. I was born in a central Thai province in 1967. Yes, I am one whose people said that I had artistic talent since I was young. For my part, I believe that children who will become artists must love to draw and paint from childhood on. I was such a child. I loved to sketch on my books. I wanted to study painting in the university Fine Arts faculty after high school.

"I then decided to study for a master's degree in art. During that time I worked as a university art teacher. But I didn't finish the master's degree because I did not complete my thesis. I don't know what I was thinking. Thai people call this mood 'that artist feeling.' And yes, I have plenty of it in my body and my soul. I left the university and sought money. I had a good freelance job painting motorbike oil tanks and it made a lot of money for me. Then I went back to teaching painting in the university Fine Arts Faculty and retired only last year.

"At the university, I met an American art student and she became my girlfriend. After I met her, it's like my life was changed too. We traveled together to other countries – China, Nepal, the United States, Europe, India. Then three years later, we had a child.

"It's an amazing time for me. Before I had my son, my works always expressed the severe feelings in my mind. The movement of my brush was very rigid; the feeling it presented on the canvas was sadness, pretense and suffering. It may be because I was young and saw everything around me as bad. When an old girlfriend would break my heart, I'd paint huge, colorful and violent paintings to blow off my feelings. Before I met my American girlfriend, I was always drinking and smoking when I painted and I worked too much, maybe ten to twelve hours per day. My health suffered. I knew this, but I wasn't inspired to change.

"My son is my answer. I feel like I have more responsibility. His life is in my hands. He is so cute and I with him I feel alive. I no longer drink alcohol or smoke and my mind is calm. I don't know why it is like that, but it is. I have also become a vegetarian. For sure, my painting has changed like the other side of a coin. My painting now seems like flying in the sky. It's deeply calm and surrounded with natural things. Even its concept has changed to have more religious meaning. I found that I feel stable in my mind. My life is good and full.

"I decided to leave teaching because I want to have more time for my family. And I want more time to paint. I hope to travel to other countries again at least once a year. Traveling abroad inspires me to paint. To see other cultures, other lives is my favorite recreation. I hope I can develop my painting to have more style and more meaning too."

Dokbua has held solo exhibitions throughout Thailand, and has participated in collective exhibits at the University of Colorado (1998), in Singapore (1997), and at Naropa University (U.S.A., 1996).

FINDING YOUR SIZE

Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.

WAIST

Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.

LOW WAIST

Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.

HIPS

Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.

Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.

SLEEVE

Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.

INSEAM

Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.

Belts with buckles are measured in inches that correspond to a waist size however, most people do not wear belts on the waist, they wear them closer to the hips. A buckle belt measurement is take from the end of the "pin" of the buckle to the middle hole on the belt. Generally there are 5 holes for size adjustment, with a 1" space between each, so the middle hole will the be average size of the belt.

For at tie belt (no buckle) measure the belt portion end to end and half of the tie portion. This again is the medium size of the belt.

For a soft fabric tie belt it can be called "1 size fits most" and the entire length of the belt should be measured and listed.

See buckle/tie belt size standards below.

Triple 'Win' Pricing

UNICEF Market offers triple win pricing, where YOU the consumer, Children from around the world, and Artisans all benefit.

WIN # 1 You Save!

Handmade goods from developing nations usually pass through a series of intermediaries before being purchased by retail consumers. Each of these intermediaries adds cost to the product, and that cost is passed on to the customer. UNICEF USA partnered with NOVICA, who works directly with artists through their regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America, allowing purchases from UNICEF Market to go directly from the artisans to fulfilling customer orders. By skipping steps in the traditional supply chain, you can buy high quality items for less than the regular retail prices.

WIN # 2 Children Benefit!

Each item purchased from UNICEF Market will benefit UNICEF's programs that provide lifesaving nutrition, medicine, education, clean water, emergency relief and more to children in need.

You can learn more about UNICEF's work, on About UNICEF.

WIN # 3 Artisans Profit!

UNICEF Market artisans set their own prices and control their own businesses. UNICEF Market offers artisans a free platform to sell their work throughout the United States.
