How To Care For Your Leather Handbags

As a self-professed purse-aholic, I’ve learned a couple of things. First; I can never (ever) have too many handbags. It is not possible. Second; leather handbags are my absolute favorite! Leather is classic, stylish and durable, whether it’s used to create small bags, large totes, or anything in between.

Having collected quite a few (don’t tell my husband) expensive ones, I’ve learned how to care for my handbags. I consider them to be investments so I want them to last for YEARS! Seriously, would you want this bag to only be around for a single season? Yeah, me neither!

Black Baguette Bag Crafted of Quality Leather with 4 Pockets, 'Jet Black Style' Leather Handbag Care

This baguette bag goes from day to night easily! Jet black leather with an external pocket. Lined interior features one zippered pocket and two open pockets as well. This bag is 6¾” high and 12½” wide.

Let’s Talk About Leather Care!

First: you’ll want to start with clean hands. I know this sounds like a silly step but your hands can have lotion, oils or grime on them. So clean hands, please!

Second: For this step; use a damp, NOT wet, rag. Leather takes forever to dry! Use a leather cleaner. Whether you choose to use a liquid leather cleaner or a bar soap cleaner, make sure it’s made for leather. Apply the cleaner in small circular motions and wipe off with a slightly damp rag. I follow this step with a clean, dry, soft cloth to buff the leather.

Good news! You only have to do this once or twice a year to keep your bags in great shape. After all, if you are investing in a quality handbag you’ll want it to be around for years!

A few more tips to care for your leather handbags

Stains: Remove stains as soon as they appear. My secret fix for food, grease or ‘mystery’ stains is chalk. Yup, the kind that is used on the blackboard. Crush some plain white chalk and tap onto the stain. Let this sit over night and buff the chalk away in the morning. You’ll be amazed how well this works.

Moisturize: Yes, your leather needs moisturizing just like your face to keep it soft. Remember to use a leather conditioner. I always try a test spot on the bottom of the bag or the leather tag that arrives with some handbags.

This beautiful handbag with it’s contrasting topstitch trim is quite the eye catcher.  This supple brown leather handbag has three pockets, one with a zipper, and an outer pocket on the back closes with a magnetic snap. There are two zippers at the sides that when unzipped open gussets to expand the interior capacity or you can leave them zipped for a trimmer line. The bag is lined in solid tan polyester with a suede-like texture. It measures 12¼” high, 15¾” wide.

Final Tip: Dust covers! Use them! They protect your handbag from dirt, dust and they keep your husband from knowing you have yet another bag in the closet. Dust covers are our friends!
